Is Joe Ford good enough to cover for George?

A real concern, we have had two quality 210's all season covering for each other during injuries etc.
So next season if it is Joe that is coming in is he good enough, could/ should we have kept Burns? Is it a cap issue?

That's assuming Joe would be 2nd choice.
And no we couldn't of kept Burns.

As far as the cap is concerned it should be noted that Williams was offered £400k by Gloucester. Assuming that he would even want to stay and continue to fight it out with Burns, Tigers would probably have needed to at least match that offer.
For the Burns/Williams combo to remain in place it would surely have taken up £750k of the cap at least. So, with George apparently coming over for £450k, should the club not go on to spend the £300k difference that should be remembered in any comparison of the strength at FH.

Good point Fuzzy Dunlop, I was making a similar point on Tom Croft at the weekend. If we are paying him Lions money its a waste, if he's on normal squad man money he's a great option.
Regards Joe Ford: I'm not sure if he will be no.2 or not. If he is then I would worry if we have enough cover should George Ford become injured and miss long chunks of time.

Mauger suggested recently on RL that signings were largely done for next year, other than Glaws 8 we have signed, that may be it?.
Signings may be done for next season, however there may be players already signed to be announced, I hope that is the case.

As its been said before but lets just pop it in again we also have the best Australian 10 at the moment in the squad..
Mat would start for Australia and be one of the first on the team sheet so to have two of the worlds top teams tens in the squad seems a very fair and wonderful set up
not many if any teams can boast that...

Joe Ford would be the cover 10 most likely for George, I don't think Toomua will play much at 10 with Manu crocked still, Toomua will play centre.
Joe Ford will find it as hard as other Tigers 10's have without an awesome pack ahead of him.
This thread is about Joe and not George or England stay on thread.

Wils,
I appreciate Mat has not come to play ten but the start of the thread was about cover for ten when George is not available.
I firmly believe the plan would be to move Mat into that spot for those games, why would you not? why take the risk with a lesser ten when you such a sharp tool in the box.
we have covered for them both all season with other centres

I think Wils' point is that we signed Matt Toomua with two top class fly halves on the books as an inside centre. We shouldn't be going into a new season planning on playing him at 10 whenever George is away on international duty or crocked. We should be playing him outside a quality 10
Hopefully we're not heading for another make do and mend season with fly halves as the spot to be made do and mended rather than (or heaven forbid as well as) in 12 and 13.

Tbh I think the direction the club will take will be almost entirely dictated by who is available on the market. It might well be the case that there's better value for money to be found in having Toomua concentrate more on 10 for when Ford is unavailable and using the freed up funds to plug the gap at centre. For what it's worth the Aussies themselves seem to be completely divided on whether he's better at 10 or 12.

Here Here.
We don't want make do and mend, look at the issue in the Back Row with 'Hybrid' players.

I give up make do and mend! Mat is without doubt a better player than George at flyhalf,,,

Who said that Toomua wouldn't play 10 for Tigers when he arrived? It was my understanding that he was considered both a 10 and a 12 in our squad.
Freddie had to go Bath. He had no choice. He was part of the bate. The transfer fee even. If Freddie didn't go to Bath then Mr Fragile wouldn't be joining Tigers.
And back to the thread title. No. Not even fit to lace his boots. We need another quality 10 and then he'd be a just about acceptable 4th choice. Until the Academy spits out a better option.

Thing about George, who is, at 23, potentially a great player and already is very good when a pack is going forward, but a flaky goal kicker; he will be away I believe for nearly 45% of the normal season with England , and that is assuming he doesn't get injured. Also, Bath have just been told we cannot play him in all our remaining 5 games, because England PS protocols mean he has to be rested for at least one of them.
Someone on our website has worked out, we will have had access to GF for only 55% of first team games this season. Therefore, assuming EJ continues to pick him, you will need a very good back up player or players to cover for his absences.
We are in the cart because our main back up Priestland has damaged himself and may miss the rest of the season and therefore are looking at one of the Academy boys to start at 10. This proves you need at least 3 competent fly halves during a season and I thought you had it right with the more experienced steady Burns and the younger talented Williams.
I just wish Freddie was available to Bath now, and you could have George straight away, as he is our future and we are very glad the Ford family have/will be expunged from our memories very soon.

Is Joe Ford good enough to cover for George Ford?
I don't know, can he maintain a consistent 50% kicking average ? Only accurately field kick under 30 metres ? Bounce off any attacker over 16 stones ? Does he need a kicker/bodyguard at 12 ? If so he may well be a replacement for Georgie boy.

Anglo Welsh cup games during international break : play Joe Ford.
League games whilst George away, play Toomua.
George gets injured. Play Toomua.
Toomua injured during internationals. Hmmm.
Assume Ford goes on Lions. He will miss start of season. Back for Europe then off again for the Autumns. Let's hope Toomua can stay fit next year!

I kind of hope Ford doesnt go on the Lions tour. Sexton and Farrell will be first choice 10's (with Farrell covering 12 as well) so its just a case of which other fly half gets selected.
Although if i had to put my money where my mouth is I'd say it would be Ford
