4G v Grass

Having just watched the 1st half played on a boggy rain soaked Rec with no pace or flowing rugby I wonder how many people would still prefer to see rugby played on 4G pitches.

Bath will be going Desso with the new stadium but the supporters voted against 4G. Hybrid seems a good compromise.

Really ? The game just doesn’t seem to get going and certainly is more suitable to Bath than Sarries.
Was thinking of watching England in the cricket but just seen the score so am going to stick with the rugby 🙁

It’s called ‘rugby’! It involves both running when it’s sunny and 30 big men wrestling in mud when it’s not...

To be fair the pitch already looks better now the rain has stopped.

Even the grass at VR was better than the Bath pitch. The way scrums went down through loss of footing is dangerous. IMO the pitch is not up to Prem standard.

There have been many comments about burns sustained on 4G pitches but no mention of trench foot playing on waterlogged grass pitches.

On last week's Rugby Pod, Big Jim said he got blood poisoning from a burn he got from playing on the pitch at Gloucester, so it can happen anywhere. Mitchell might have avoided his burn if he hadn't gone for a sliding no arm tackle on Spencer...

I can see players wearing leggings and arm protectors as a matter of course on 4G pitches in the not too distant future.

I hope they find a way to make it more comfortable for players. Give me the plastic any day. It's just a better game!

Totally agree Duncan96 -fast paced rugby is what the game needs.

The Rec - Water sodden sloping pitch not aided by Poor Lighting for evening games. I have been soaked through more times while attending games at "Royal Bath" than any other stadium. No convenient bar to escape to!! As for the Loos, forget it.

The Rec is a disgrace. But grass is a far better surface.
Top class football in England will not allow plastic and they are right. 100%.

I first watched Bath play at the Rec in 1972. I even played on it a few times some years later. It was a very poor surface then, often water logged and a mud bath. It doesn't appear to have improved much, if at all, in the intervening years. As you'd expect it's a nice surface in September and May but the problem is all the months in between.

It's right next to a big river. The water table rises. I doubt that drainage will help much

I think the suggestion is that IF the get planning to redevelop the REC the pitch will be raised a couple of feet .... perhaps a visiting Bath fan could confirm?

Certainly the proposal involves building a car park under the pitch so they would have every opportunity to improve it.
