The "Sunshine Home in Dublin, for Blind Irish referees", now accepts commentators

Gordon D'Arcy!
Despite the TMO clearly pointing out that the relevant criterion for the first disallowed try was 'downward pressure', he prattles on about 'control'.
'Control' WAS the relevant criterion for Ringrose's disallowed try, but I fail to understand why any commentators are employed on TV, if they can't identify this real time.
I'd give the gig to the Large Welsh bloke, and I don't mean Eddie Butler!
Unfortunately, there's a waiting list: from Fergus Slattery thru Alan Quinlan!

Was it the same commentator that said you can't knock on in goal?

In fairness to D'Arcy and Quinlan, if you've spent your career playing for Munster or Leinster, then you haven't actually needed to ever learn the laws, as you will have become accustomed to decisions simply being given in your favour

D'Arcy played an insular blinder too.
Ben O'Keefe was giving Guirado a lecture which he plainly wasn't comprehending when Gordon observes "That's made it clear" or words to that effect. The ancestors who gave D'Arcy his surname would be turning in their graves; those who gave O'Keefe his, would be laughing their c*cks off!
It only requires about 75 words of French for a ref to be able successfully to communicate to a French team. They can be learnt in the time it takes to fly from Auckland to Singapore, let alone the following legs.

The trouble is that the Laws make no mention of "control" when scoring a try.
LAW 21 In-goal
GROUNDING THE BALL
The ball can be grounded in in-goal:
By holding it and touching the ground with it; or
By pressing down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front of the player’s body from waist to neck.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu

I believe that 'holding is the word that gets translated as 'control'. I don't have much of a problem with that; It's the myriad commentators, who confuse the two criteria that you have quoted, that get my goat!

Yes I am sure that's the case - and there are other examples where the terms used are colloquial and do not make an appearance in the Laws. My favourite is 'crossing' which is merely descriptive of one example under Law 10 Obstruction.
By the by, I looked up Law 10 and the principle section with which it opens suggests 'The game is played only by players who are onside.' I had to laugh - I wonder if anyone ever told he of the cloak of invisibility when he was playing.
I was 17 miles from Graybridge before I was caught by the school leopard

I still smile when I think of the late Bill McClaren's commentrs on John Jeffries
The man was born offside
