You don't have an introductions thread, so I'll say hi here.
I'm John, and I've been reading this board with interest for a while now. I love the previews and match reports in particular (thank you authors for your time and trouble). I like the atmosphere very much, and have to say that this is one of the most friendly forums I've ever seen. Even the most severe disagreements are conducted with civility (with the exception of one sad little chap who pollutes every single board with his tedious dribblings ... best ignored, I feel).
So I decided to sign up and try and contribute now and again. I'm a rugby fan - League and Union alike. Being from near Wigan, League was the game ... being a Grammar-bug in the 70's, Union was the game at school. Now living in Lincolnshire, sadly I don't see very much live rugby apart from on the idiot's lantern.
I've really followed Saracens with interest from the time you signed one of my rugby heroes - Andy Farrell. As you'll know his debut was delayed by a series of injuries and a car crash - and he was never quite the same player afterwards. Even then he was considered worthy of international caps, but believe me - you never saw him at his very best.
How good was he? Let me put it this way ... I have no end of man-love for his son - but as good as he is, young Owen is a bit of a weed in comparison with his dad at the same age. Faz Snr was an absolute monster, and I had the privelage of watching him at Central Park when Wigan were winning the League/Cup double for six consecutive years.
I look forward to making a whole lot of new forum buddies over the coming weeks and months.

Welcome John. Haven’t you been tempted to watch Doncaster Knights? Pretty decent standard in the Championship.

Welcome John. Wigan eh - congratulations on your escape You're right about Faz senior, we never really saw the best of him. He was a fantastic League player, up there with Ellery Hanley imo, just a shame he didn't play for the Rhinos!
I must pick you up on forum etiquette however. It is traditional for our latest recruit to pass comment on the most recent report/preview. You will see from the lack of comments that hundreds are waiting for you to unblock the thread.
I can confirm Zak's comment re Donny above, famed for their Cow Pie and, understandable in some ways, dislike of Yorkshire Carnegie. A lovely ground too.

one of my favourite Andy Farrell moments was watching him warm up close to us with Moses. (Moses was a scrum half)
Moses was flinging out passes at full range and AF was returning them slightly faster and flatter but without any noticable movement of his arms, just by flicking his wrists. Both left and right.
It was a great pity about he Car Park episode because we migh well have got an extra season out of him

JO'G - interesting! In his early days I thought Faz (jn) had a style of pass very similar to his old man's seemingly unique method, which I classed as unusually straight arms. About 5/6 years ago he seemed to move towards a more common bent arm technique, to the extent that I'd forgotten how much his passing used to remind me of Dad's.
If I recall correctly, one of Andy's ambitions was to play in the Premiership alongside Owen, something I believe he never managed to accomplish.

Welcome John. No one likes us (though some seem to be obsessed with us), but we like each other!

Yes had that chance in an EDF cup game (not Premiership I realise) IIRC... But Andy went off as Owen went on.

Welcome John.
I thought he did in a match at Vicarage Road, where Owen came on as a substitute. Was I dreaming that?

Owen did come on a substitute. But Owen actually replaced his dad (broken thumb I think?) so they never ended up on the pitch together at the same time.

...and it wasn't Prem as 1876 said. However, it was the match which made Owen our youngest-ever player. Llanelli Scarlets.

Thanks to all for the welcome - this board does feel rather like a family.
Rob - I have a finely tuned BS detector, and the winker filter is set to 11 ...
Zak - hadn't thought of the Knights, will have a look - probably next season now though. Thanks for the suggestion.
TOKS - yes, I noticed. It strikes me as mostly a degree of envy rather than outright hostility, but there are some exceptions.

Cheeky @#$%&!
Escape from Wigan, indeed. I spent 22 years fixing jets in RAF Lincolnshire, and it further fuelled a long-standing interest in Bomber Command history - particularly the stories behind the crews awarded the Victoria Cross.
I saw the "Black Pearl" at Central Park too, but he moved on the year before Andy made his debut. Although Andy played 2nd row/loose forward, he'd have been equally good at centre, as a few of you have noted regarding his ability to pass both ways. Him and Ellery would have been something to see.
That Wigan side didn't lack quality centres, mind. Notable ones included Gary Connolly, and two kiwis - Dean Bell, and ex All Black Va'aiga Tuigamala (later of Newcastle Falcons). We signed him as "Inga the Winger", told him he was too slow, too fat and not fit enough - and turned him into "Inga the Centre."
I'll consider myself told orft for my lack of forum etiquette - you'll note I have improved my manners above
