Thanks Clarkey, a good read.

Was one of the two with whistles a short guy with a Lancastrian accent?

I suffered a similar experience under him - in the days when he had hair and mine was black.

it was at Fylde the previous year, when he took a coaching session. The warm up was more tiring than many matches I had played up to that point and although I counted myself fit, I was stiff from it for days after.

I was not told to "go away and come back when you are fit" as Fylde had 6 adult XVs in those days so newcomers were welcome, but it took a while to get beyond the 6th XV (which had reputation for holding onto young players to compliment the slower veterans - as even B Beaumont found to his cost).

Anyway, that was one of the best coaching sessions I have ever been involved in and, even to this day I think of him as one of the most innovative coaches England have ever produced.

Bath were lucky to have him.
