Canada Game

Last night was a good game and good to see so many players getting game time. An entertaining game in which I hope was beneficial for both teams and good crowd numbers for a Monday night. I didnít have a team sheet but thought Knox and Junior looked good and caused problems. Povey played well at FB and the wing showed good feet and pace to score. Also saw some glimpses of what ďBĒ can do with some big runs and hits although the scrum wasnít particularly solid.
My only complaint was the bar again, I have just deleted most of my complaints as was longer than my comments on the game which is just wrong. When there are 5 bar staff it should not take ten mins to get served when you are the only person in the queue.......truly terrible. I always used to stay after the game but now donít which is a shame.

Totally agree about Rob and Junior. We need a much steeper attacking line though so we hit the ball and gain line at pace to break open a defence. Something that coaches don't seem to train anymore... Speed makes holes.
Also thought jack Preece had a great game.
Louis Roach could be quite a talent given a chance....

The ball protection at rucks and breakdowns was quite poor, this has been in league games too. Not enough bodies committing to secure a platform. Forwards standing out in a messy backline . Ball then getting robbed or spoilt by the opposition , this causes slow phases or lost ball

maybe we could do with a part-time breakdown coach to do a similar job to that done by Boris with the scrum? Louis Deacon is probably stronger on the set-piece and maul side of things. It's such an important area that a bit of extra specialist expertise might be worth investing in.

They were breaking deeper when Stokes came on. One thing I did notice last night and also seen in other games was very poor passing. Lots of chances butchered by passes being behind so players had to halt their runs or some completely wayward. Another positive was Kwaku seemed to have a much better awareness and aggressive defence, would hope he is knocking on the door soon as proved in the preseason when he scored twice. Correct about the breakdowns as their 5 (Grumpy Thor) caused all sorts of problems. Against Yorkshire we were turned over a lot so definitely something to be worked on.

Agree with everything you say Mark, coupled with Mikey's comments about the passing.

Frustrating but things that can be worked on...

Enjoyed the evening. Think our first 15 could win though, not a complaint however as I like how Cov approached it.

If we could sign any of the Canadian side, who would you pick?

I rated the 5 ( grumpy Thor lol) and the starting loosehead

i though the game was well staged pre match. as to the performance though canada were physically much stronger up front & largely dominated our forwards. i didnt think anyone particularly held there hands up for a starting place. the defence first half was poor, though the scrum half pulled off some latch ditch efforts and the work at the breakdown lacked commitment.
the jury i still out re the fly half, restarts were generally poor and didnt see much of him shaping the attack. the right wing did well in the second half when he had the ball.no 8 also put in a shift.more injuries meant gulliver had to come on -he didnt look fit and will be sore today!

canada looked a well drilled side, we rarely got near their line out & had a powerful scrum.

Agree with most of the above. Of the newcomers Povey and Roach stood out and Brazier and Palmer played well together. Knox, Preece and Stokes ex as always. Sorry to say Sharpe at 10 not cutting the mustard. Maisey first choice and give Povey a go during these cup games.

Agree also re the bar. 3 people served me.... 1 took money 1 poured half my guiness and 1 filled it up!!. Why don't they pour half pints and top up like any other busy bar does!!

I challenge any fly half to have looked good with the slow ball we managed to win last night. Having said that I can't say Jake stood out as being any worse than anyone else. Passing was generally poor from everyone but he did put in some nice crisp deliveries.

Will didn't impress much in his last home game remember.

Thought when flinn was at 9 the delivery to 10 was much better. Sharpe clearly has a lower back injury. Very clear last night he canít really walk without pain. Iíd rest him til Xmas and get him right. With Maisey, Palmer and Povey weíve got adequate cover.

Some perspective? Full international side vs a makeshift 2nd team who have played one game together this season (Nighthawks v Irish). Some players arenít on loan so woefully short of match practice.

In that light the Cov team(s) put on a good show and had the upper hand in the last quarter when the big Canada forwards started to blow.

Very difficult and perhaps harsh to judge fringe/development players from half a game (ish). Hopefully some will get a run in the Cup games.

Well said GM. At last a realistic view rather than the all-pervading negativity.

Technically, it wasnít quite the full international squad, as several players had played at the weekend in the French league and watched rather than playing, but nonetheless it was a squad of internationals who had played together,m.

Unfortunately I couldn't attend last night, but was glad to see Kwaku, Brazier, Palmer, Lane and Roach get runs out; because they have impressed when I have seen them and are very much Coventry's future.

It would have been good to see the likes of Povey and Flinn who I haven't really seen yet.

A lot has happened since RW arrived and there has been growth throughout the club, squad, support staff, development team and under 18's.

I am looking forward to Thursday and Rowlands forum which I am sure will be as open and as insightful as the previous ones. If any fans haven't been to one of these before I would recommend they try and get along.

Flinn made a couple of try saving tackles and I thought Ben P had a good spell when he came on - certainly one I'd like to see come on again from before.

All-pervading negativity?

Have you actually read all the comments above? They are not "all pervading negativity", but a mix of views that others have taken time and trouble to share.

Please read other posts more carefully before making such a sweeping statement

Edited - cut down significantly

The comment refers to the forum as a whole. Not just this thread.

I stand by the phrase. In a season that the thoughtful knew would be difficult on the pitch I consider that much of what is said here goes beyond reasonable comment and criticism and fails to give credit where it is due, whether by the people of the club, or our opponents.

Back to the game ....... Ben Palmer always impresses me when he gets on and I hope he gets a chance in the cup games. Although they have not played together much I thought the team did well and got to the breakdown quicker than the league team perhaps the youngsters are easier to coach and react better to instruction
