Nothing confirmed on Basham and more a case of the writer there putting 2 and 2 together. Good chance of being right but he could also being doing a Josh Beaumont or genuinely have big career plans that don't involve rugby.

Either way, I'd be surprised if we saw him again in a LI shirt.

Looks like we'll be running a larger senior academy squad next season to supplement the senior squad, as I can't see only one player being added.

Sarries won nothing by having good kids? Isn't half their team from their academy?

A lot of their team 'graduated' from the Academy, having been pilfered from local club sides

farell, isikwie, itoje, george, pretty sure they're key to sarries success and came through the academy.

That's generally how it works though. Most of our lads will have played for local clubs too at some point before being picked up by our age grade setup. Promising players aren't going to progress to the top level with England (at U18/U20) if they are not part of a premiership academy.

I guess the idea of coming through the Academy means being signed up at the age of 16 or later, a world away from footballers coming through the Academy from the age of 8 or whatever. I dunno the rules and regulations (obviously), are Premiership / Championship Academies run from the age of 16?

Pretty good table showing how it works on the offie. Youngest age we get involved is at 13 with the talent identification process picking up kids from our catchment area from 13-15. Will be several hundred at that age that then get whittled down through the age groups.

Guessing most players that end up will have been picked up at this point, with some coming in later (like Brand and Cokanasiga)

Interestingly we got handed the Middlesex catchment area from Sarries a few years ago, so players should soon start filtering through from there. Would have had Itoje if that had happened a bit earlier!

Yes, especially as Harrow is now within our catchment area.

Didnít we get Middx from Wasps?

Yeah, probably be wrong on that one. Had assumed Sarries as Itoje was ex Harrow. Looks like he grew up in Harpenden though which is Sarries though, so would explain that.

Maybe times have changed a bit, but some rough research suggests:

Farrell - Harpenden until age 16
Isiekwe - Old Albanian until age 16
George - Hertford until age 15
Goode - Cambridge RFC until age 18
Itoje - Harpenden until age 17
Kruis - Dorking until age 18
Wray - Westcliff and Barking until age 16

Although maybe some (most) were identified earlier...

That doesn't mean they weren't also involved with academies prior to that though, just means that they were still allowed to play club Rugby up until that point. The closer to 18 you get the less keen academies are on players appearing for school and club. Of course there may be some who had no academy affiliation until the ages specified, but I would suggest it is less rather than more.

Likely to be some crossover there.

Farrell looks about right, Isiekwe was first involved with Sarries at 13. George was 14. Wouldn't be surprised if Goode was involved at Sarries before 18, wiki just references him starting in the senior academy. Itoje was 14. Kruis looks right. Can't find anything concrete on Wray joining.
