The Annual Attendance Stats...2016!

It's that time of year again for the sad statto to regale you with the attendances across the clubs & competitions! This year I haven't done the Top14 as their website is now very hard to get meaningful figures from, so I've focussed on the AP and P12 clubs only. As usual, where there are two numbers given against a team, the figure in brackets shows the attendance at all games, including those played at “special” venues such as Wembley, Twickenham, etc. Percentages are for the percentage capacity of home ground (where there are more than one normal home ground, the percentage is calculated based on the possible attendance weighted by games played at each ground). The Percentage figure in green/red is the percentage change compared to the previous season. All set? Well, here we go....

Now for the analysis.....

Obviously, the World Cup will have an affect on the figures this year. It may have been an influence in the lower Pro12 attendances, given that they were playing while the RWC was on. It would also have an impact on the first couple of rounds of the AP, which were played during the knockout stages.

That said, there should be some real concern among the Celtic teams, particularly in Ireland. The numbers for the traditionally "bigger" teams of Leinster and Munster have fallen drastically across the season. Even with Connacht doing well this season domestically, their numbers are down year on year too. This is worrying.

Welsh teams are a mixed bad, with two teams showing growth, and two teams plunging dramatically. Their attendances since they became regions has always been poor, but to see the team based in the capital city to only be able to get under 6k for their home games is frankly not good enough. They can fill out the Millennium Stadium (sorry, Principality Stadium as we now have to call it) for Internationals & a Double header, so why can't they actually grow the game when played at Arms Park!

Scotland had a mixed season. Edinburgh are relatively stabe, and with the announcement this week that they're looking for a new home more suited to their gates, I think things are looking good for the, Glasgow were affected by having to take some of their games to other grounds after Scotsoun was waterlogged has affected them, and I'd hope that next season, they can be back to normal.

The Italian teams could do with some form of boost. Here's hoping that Conor has some impact onto that.

As for the English teams? Most of them are looking relatively stable. Only Sale have shown a significant drop, which is surprising considering how well they've done at home games this season. If you ignore the blip with our Montpellier game, we're now the closest to capacity when compared with the other teams. Of course, part of this is from the expansion going on at Sandy Park, Welford Road and Franklin's Gardens. I would expect the club to start looking at how to expand the North Stand within the next couple of seasons.

How do our stats look if you strip out Big Game? Also being a saddo, I quite like the fact that the average in all comps for english teams is 12,792 and our average is 12,729

I strip out the Big Game in the numbers already, Le Tiss. The numbers in brackets are for all games, while the one without brackets is for games played at The Stoop only. All percentages are based of games played at normal home grounds (i.e. The Stoop in our case). So:

Quins Attendances:

All Home Games: 16,354
All Home Games played at The Stoop: 12,729 (86.01% of capacity) a fall of 6.14% compared to last season. However, as I commented in the original post, that is heavily skewed by the Montpellier Thursday evening game, which only got 7,136. If that is excluded, the average for all games played at The Stoop this season is 14,038, 95.16% of capacity, and an increase of +3.85% on last season

All Aviva Premiership games: 19,088 (Includes BG8)
Aviva Premiership games at The Stoop: 13,925 (94.09% of capacity) a fall of 0.85% compared to Aviva Premiership games played at The Stoop in '14-'15

It's pretty amazing that the English club attendance grew given the RWC (and the terrible England performance).

Do you have any stats that shed light on this statement: "...it may have been an influence in the lower Pro12 attendances, given that they were playing while the RWC was on..."

Maybe a comparison of the first x games of the season whilst the RWC was on and the same games last season? Coupled with a during RWC average and post RWC average should give you a bit of a clue as to how great an affect it had.

A shout out to Warriors too. They've grown their average premiership attendance from 7,956 in 13/14 to 8,974 in 15/16.* Not bad for a club coming from the championship...

*Numbers from Statbunker.

I'll see if I can come up with something. But I would guess that's not the main reason for the significant falls in the Irish numbers, seeing how the year on year percentage change for all games (including European games that were all played outside the RWC and were typically their big event games) are also down by quite a bit....

Did I miss some big news on Leinster or have they just nose dived dramatically?

DOK - probably the impact of not being able to include huge crowds at the AVIVA as they failed to make the knockout stages in Europe.

Talking of stats, have a gander at the stats from the Exeter game. [www.premiershiprugby.com]

You'd have though it was a close game!

(Fair play to Robshaw and Clifford - some amount of work and impact there)

Top work FF, that must have taken somne time, feels right for Sarries as well not having the 'Sell outs' but the ground has felt fuller this year....

I would expect the club to start looking at how to expand the North Stand within the next couple of seasons.

During his little chat in the members bar last Saturday David Ellis said that there was a "stadium development plan" being worked on currently which should be published during the summer break.

Do the Wasps figures prove that the move to Coventry has been successful or do people think that next season when all is more settled will give a better idea. Interesting stats, good work FF.

I make the average at The Stoop for the AP 14,165.

How can one sub par attendance (about -5k) on a Thursday night result in a mean drop of 1,354 for Quins across every game in the season - or am I missing something?

For the champions* to be in 8th (and avoid 9th place out of 12 by virtue of 37 spectators) is pretty pathetic.

I took my numbers from the Premiership Rugby website. This year I waited until now so that I only had one week (last week) to update the numbers manually.

fantastic as ever but I was wondering how the crowd percentages is affected by number of season ticket holders or members. Is this figure even available there are usually rumours or statements from clubs when a certain target is reached. Do contributors from other clubs know what there membership total is. This would give a feel for how many casuals turn up and what effect kick off time may have on games

I believe we have typically had in the region of 8k to 9k membership over the last few years.
