Quins Back Row

Notice that Wasps have re-signed Carr again the Sagffer who looked really useful last season. So now have him plus Shields and Hughes.

Even with Bothma hopefully returning fit and properly mended we look a bit thin thin on ball carriers in this area. Robshaw plus a mix of Clifford. Chisholm. Luamanu and Wallace, The latter gentleman really do not seem to offer much in this area so who is going to do the hard yards ?

TRP stated that Gustad wanted a ball carrying back row and some names had been put forward

I disagree a bit on Chisholm carrying - but overall it’s a worry. I think Bothma could be the answer though.

How do you know he’s out of condition? Or is rugby only now for one body type?

Don’t rise to the troll Blucher.

Bothma, Clifford and Baby Chis are all good carriers and if they bring in one more, it’ll give us cover for injuries and internationals. But we also need grafters at the breakdown so don’t just focus on carriers.

Danny, Sailli & Mike are good carriers as well in the backs so how do we get them engaged sooner from the breakdown. Danny more obvious of course.

Luamanu doesn’t make the Mo type breaks you’d expect him to so I’d like to see Clifford or Baby Chis at 8 and Bothma, Robshaw, newbie and Wallace covering the flanks.

Doubt Luamanu is too out of condition s he's just been selected as No 8 for his International Debut for Samoa against Fiji

The new lad Dombrandt is a good ball carrier if you watch his highlights reel , although he played Lock and Back row for Cardiff Met it seems we signed him as a 4 or 5 .

Gregor Townsend commented that James Lang was a powerful ball carrier and tackler and that's why hes given him his debut .

Carrying into contact is a lot about confidence and knowing that support players will be close behind you - I think we have some excellent ball carriers , hopefully the coaches can give them that confidence that was lacking last term .

But what else do Bothma, Clifford and Chis have in common.........? Never seem to look at our team sheet and think ‘yeah, we’ll outmuscle them today’.

Not sure that’s fair - Bothma is a bit of a monster, he looked the real deal in his brief appearance and has bulked up more now. Here’s praying his arm holds up.

That’s my point. They can only be useful if they’re on the pitch.

I disagree, Chisholm consistency made big carries this season and will only get better at this as he gains age, experience and some size. Likewise Bothma carried feriously against Sarries when we beat them in December.

Would like to see a back row of Bothma and Robshaw on the flanks with Chisolm at 8 for next season. With Luamanu or Clifford on the bench.

Wallace, Robshaw and Bothma for me. Clifford and Baby Chisholm as back ups.

Depends on how Gustard plans to use Wallace for me. If he's back as the main turnover option, I'd have him at seven, otherwise it's Chisholm, Robshaw, Bothma.

Wonder if Clifford will stick around...

Clifford has hardly played the last couple of seasons

Wallace seemed to rediscover some form near the end of the season but was otherwise poor.

Can’t work out if Clifford is any good or not anymore coz he never plays.

Don't forget Wallace had what most of us thought would be a season (if not career) ending injury in preseason. Might account for him not being on terribly good form last season.

Totally forgot - fair point

Looking at the x-rays of Bothma's arm, half of it is metal now, so it should stand up better than before. I'd have been happier if he'd had the "full Wolverine" treatment, but steel pins ought to help somewhat.
