2018/19 - Game 1 Team

Following the announcement of Haskell's signing today (which I actually think is a cracking short term signing contrary to popular opinion) it got me thinking, what will be our starting 15 and bench for game 1 of 2018/19? For what it's worth, my view is below:

1 Waller
2 Hartley
3 Hill
4 Lawes
5 Barrow
6 Gibson
7 Harrison
8 Haskell
9 Reinach
10 Biggar
11 Naiyarovoro
12 Francis
13 Burrell
14 Collins
15 Mallinder
16 Haywood
17 Van Wyk
18 Franks
19 Api
20 Brussow
21 Mitchell
22 Grayson
23 Tuala

Thoughts?

I don't think we'll see too much of Grayson on the bench. More likely to be ace and burrell/ Symons as we have Francis and Harry that can cover 10

I think Api will keep his starting spot. For me he had the biggest impact to our scrum this year.

I can't help feeling that there are more signingscoming, with no Horne we are short of class at 13.
Dont disagree with you too much though. As much as I like Collins I think that Ace will get the nod over him

Surely Haskell has not come to Saints as an 8. That would not make any sense for his ambitions and even less for Saints by playing a non 8 at 8 for a second season !

As said previously, if we are waiting on an 8 still under contract and Haskell is a stop gap for 12 months then it makes sense.
Not many if any class 8’s sitting around at the moment!

Understand your point but respectfully disagree. It will never make sense to me (regardless of who it is) to sign a stop gap in the wrong position.

Was Symonds injured last Friday evening, he came on as a substitute and departed soon after, the commentators implied it as tactical. Not a good sign for what many believe to be a 'Wanderers' signing.

Api and Franks start for me. But otherwise looks as good a team as the squad allows.

Doesn't look like a top 6 team to me though.

This exercise is a little premature for me. 17 players left and only 7 arriving so far. I’m sure there are a few quality signings to come. We can then select the team and assess its competitiveness.

Not too much difference for me but Franks is better than Waller and will bring some top class scrummaging. Haskell is a great bench option to bring impact later on. Eadie to start as he's the only 8 we've actually got.
Agree that Barrow to start, Api is a better bench option later on. Burrell doesn't start for me, just not consistent enough.
Collins to start for me as well, offer a different option to the massive man mountain that is Nai.

All in all, looks like we need a starting 8 and a starting 13. It looks like a top 6 squad but quite a way off a top 4 squad for me...hope i'm wrong.

1.Franks
2.Hartley
3.Hill
4.Lawes
5.Barrow
6.Gibson
7.Harrison
8.Eadie
9.Reinach
10.Biggar
11.Naiyarovoro
12.Francis
13.Navi
14.Collins
15.Mallinder

16.Haywood
17.Waller
18.Davis
19.Api
20.Haskell
21.Mitchell
22.Grayson
23.Tuala

the only changes i would make would be on the bench.

I would prefer to see JFR rather than Davis, until we know what the guy is all about. I also think that the bench spot should have Painter's name on it a fair bit this season.

Whilst he is definately one for the future, I'm a little unsure on how much game time Grayson will get. With him on the bench, and that starting 15, we will have Biggar, Francis, Mallinder and Grayson that can play 10.

the one thing that we are missing from the bench is a 12/ 13. Solely for that reason, I think we'll see either Nafi or Burrell on the bench. Based on Boyds backs play with the Hurricanes, I think Nafi will be the more likely starter given his skill set. Burrell to come on if we need to punch some holes later on.

You've got two looseheads on the bench

Thought Davis was a tight head, in which case JFR to the bench. Do we need to sign another tight head then? Or maybe see Painter as third choice.
