EYES BACK ON THE OTHER PRIZE! BATH v HARLEQUINS
Cokanasiga: back in?
By Devonport Lad
April 14 2026
As the last echoes of "Come On You Bath" fade after one of the most memorable nights at the Rec when the Bath squad, supported by a packed house in full voice, took a huge step forward in this year's quest for the biggest prize in European rugby, it's now time to shift the focus back onto the big domestic prize. Defending the title as Prem champions has challenged the best of teams over the years and we're going to need every bit of the spirit and "dog" that we showed on Friday night in all of the remaining games if we're going to achieve what only Wasps, Leicester and Saracens have managed to do since the Finals were introduce in 2002-03. And it starts with the visit of Harlequins this Saturday.
Last Friday's game and the atmosphere at the Rec was on another level. Even those of us with decades of games to look back on would be hard pressed to recall one that matched it. With both teams bringing their "A" game and going at it with an intensity that was genuinely test match level at times it produced a roller coaster of emotions for both sets of supporters. Truly great performance, boys, but coming hard on the heels of the Saracens game, it might be good for us as supporters to have a match where we don't go through the full emotional wringer. "Never too high, never too low" is a difficult mantra to follow sometimes!
"You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quins" is a refrain that rings around the Stoop as they sing their version of Manfred Mann's rendition of Bob Dylan's words. Putting the double negative to one side, it does seem to sum up Harlequins' season so far. We really haven’t seen anything, or at least not much, of the "mighty Quins" that we're used to. Yes, they've impressed on occasions, notably spoiling Bristol's "Big Day Out" in Cardiff in the last round of the Prem, but they haven’t so far been able to string together the run of consistent performances that their squad should be capable of. Does that sound familiar? In many ways it was our story a few short seasons ago.
Quins are currently 9th in the Prem table on 15 points, one point behind Gloucester and within striking distance of Sale in 7th on 22. Realistically, the best Quins can now aim for is finishing in 8th or above and qualifying for next year's Champions Cup. But in a sense their position in the table gives them a certain freedom to play an uninhibited brand of rugby. They are a proud club with a long history and they will want to finish the season having given their supporters something to cheer about and all that makes them a dangerous potential banana skin on our path to a home semi-final in the Prem. So what do we do about squad selection for this game?
The calculation got even more difficult this afternoon after Bordeaux Bègles booked a home semi-final. Throw the Northampton match on 25th April into the mix and you need access to a supercomputer to work out the best options, or of course JvG's analytical brain and notebook! Much has been made of the depth of the Bath Squad and I think JvG will need to draw on all of it to get the right selections for each of these games. Of course, using the wider squad takes on a different complexion when you think about players like Messrs Frost, Richards, Bayliss, Staddon, Carr-Smith, Ojomoh, Butt and Cokanasiga to name a few, but fighting on two fronts at this stage of the season will not be easy.
We're going into this phase of the Prem on the same number of points that we had at this time last season, but the competition for the top 4 places is much closer than it was last year. With that in mind, I think we need to try to bank 5 points against Quins this weekend. There will be some rotation but I think we have to go strong. Players like the ones that I mentioned above who didn't feature on Friday give us the opportunity to make some changes without significantly weakening the matchday 23. That said, the front row is a worry, especially if Beno is carrying an injury. The compromise will be in team selection for the Saints game on the 25th, balancing the need to ensure that the players who are likely to face Bordeaux are match ready against the risk of injury in key positions.
So here we go, with two prizes to aim for. It's arguably a challenge way above even the campaign last year leading to the Treble. We can't let the Bordeaux game completely impact on our progress in the Prem. I'm sure JvG will be applying the "start again from zero" mantra this week in training and preparation and if we approach Saturday's game against Quins with the right focus, I'm sure we'll secure the win and look then forward to meeting the huge challenges that Northampton and then Bordeaux will present.

Personally I would throw our freshest youngsters (players) at it.
Richards, Bayliss and Frost leading the way in the forwards and TCS/BVL......maybe Donoghue but perhaps too soon for him, Butt, Ojomoh and Big Joe.
5 points for the game would set us up well....but Quins will be on a mission
Tom DG

Santi C

Dan F
Archie G
Ewan R
Ross M
Ted H
Ethan S
Josh B
Kepu T
Beno O
Thomas DT
Charlie E
Arthur G
Sam U
Tom C-S
Ciaran O'D(If fit) otherwise Cam R with Max O covering 10
Would possibly start Santi at 10, with hopefully Donoghue on the bench.
Likewise including players like Staddon and Green doesn't lose us much, if anything, but gives some of Friday's heroes a break.
Loosehead is a concern though.

It is a great chance for Archie Griffin to get some confidence back,
My concern is that he is getting chances in a rotated pack with players that aren't as strong in the scrum, so he is getting little support from behind him. What would really give him confidence / the greatest opportunity to hold his own is being a THP in a 1st choice pack. I get the obvious problems with that at this stage of the season...
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
I'd go:
VW Dunn Sela Opoku-Gyamfi Ewels Hill Staddon Barbeary
Spencer Russell Muir Mojo Lawrence JCok Santi
Kepu TDT Griffin Maloney Bayliss BVDL Donoghue/Redpath Green
Selection wise, it's a really difficult one to call. Since we exited the PRC, we've gone "full strength" 3/4 weeks, only rotating against Sale.
If we trot out the big guns at the weekend then it pretty much guarantees we'll be sending a rotated side to Franklins Gardens, which would be a totally understandable decision, but there's part of me that thinks we could really target Saints and get control of the title race.
TdT is being meticulously managed at the moment, he's only played 147 minutes across the past 4 games, so I'd be happy for him to stay in the 18 shirt and be a break glass in case of emergency option depending on how the game is going. If we're able to keep Quins at arms length by the 50 minute mark then I'd be tempted to leave our starting TH on until they are completely spent.
Backline is an interesting one, if Donoghue is available he could really alleviate some pressure from TdG and Santi, as I'd want both of them in our strongest 23 but they would also potentially be needed in a rotated squad as well.
Just put Bath in the search box.
Absolutely love it!

As discussed on another thread his entire salary is not currently within the cap. If he’s o to going to get a couple of games I suspect that they will wonder if it’s worth it, depending on the cap situation?

Usually target home prem games and I assumed we would go strong and rotate heavily for saints but alot of you have gone for loads of changes for quins.
I would maybe go somewhere in the middle as think freshening up always a good idea - lots of changes to startung xv but bomb aquad bench..
Assuming beno and underhill out I would go:
Santi
Big joe
Mojo
Redpath
Hennessey
Finn
Spencer
Kirk
Frost
Griffin
Jeanes
Ewels
Richards
Staddon
Bayliss

If Jaco was available in the run in it would be transformative to our bench.
As per another thread I think the official club line is he is out til next season.
Donoghue got same injury in same game in August but no 2 injuries and rehabs are identical, l
for jaco it may have been re- tear of same acl which presumably brings complexity abd caution.
Firmly in the surprise bonus category if we see him in the next months but as matt says there could be salary cap considerations also around whether we can use the likes of him and sam harris even if available

Think this is the case for a few players who more often than not only feature in rotated teams eg richards.
Griffin was in a full strength pack against sarries and struggled.
Sela and kirk were in a rotated side against sale and struggled.
Would be good if we have the luxury at some stage o drip feed guys in to strong lineups but as you say may be tricky.
main thing is the likes of kepu, Kirk, sela, griffin, jeanes, gyamfi, hennessey, donoghue get games and I think they will over the next few months.

Gosh. I remember when we used to release injury updates like that. Feel for them.
Yes sounds like us under Hooper. As we pointed out at the time of and since, it forms a death spiral where your players are scrambling backwards in matches and getting injured and also your 2nd / 3rd choice scrum is outgunned and so getting injured. Then you don't have the players to solve it in training either. It's not a nice position to be in.

Not saying he definitely won’t but has JvG ever gone for significant rotation for a ‘live’ home league game? Assume Kirk comes in this week and might one or two fringe players in the squad but I would still guess a version of full strength gets run out this week. Personally hope that means a start for Hill
Yeah do expect jvg to go for fairly minimal rotation but we do have good options all over the place.
Interesting about their prop issues, makes giving tdt a rest an interesting option.
Would you play hill at lock or 6?

Key player in the Bath Uni back line last year.

For us it does mean we can rotate within reason, we did last year against Newcastle at home IIRC, but then even with the rotation we’re talking about starting Hill, Bayliss, and Green in the backrow which frankly is insane!
Quote:Optimist
It's slightly cynical and not ideal for the Prem, but I would go fairly full-strength against Quins and no-strength against Saints - that appears to me to be the nailed-on route to get 5, hopefully 6, points from those 2 games, and means the run-on XV vs Bordeaux gets a 2-week run-in to the semi-final - 1 week resting up a bit, 1 week of full-bore training.
Back end of last season we rested loads week before prem semi (sarries away) so bit of a precedent that jvg likes to rest players week before big game if circumstances allow.
Week before sarries was challenge cup final so were always going to go strong.
I expect a few absentees due to injury (beno and sam) , plus a few moves between bench and starters and a couple in from outside the 23.
Largely second string against saints and hope to nick a point or 2 I imagine.
Freshness is key I think, I would rotate our way through quins, saints , BB personally but have to have key players rested before the semi final to have any chance.

Could be a good week to try him in the row with Roux coming off a dead leg but expect Molony is more likely. A Hill, Reid, Bayliss back row makes sense to me for this one

One thing for sure is that JvG will not underestimate them - they still have the likes of Dombrandt, Chandler C-S, Marcus Smith, Cadan Murley, Tim David - enough talent to cause issues.
You can only play what is in front of you - we need to put our foot on their throat and keep it there - we need an 80 minute performance, not to feel sorry for Quins.

Love that squad, I would go the same. Henneseey felt a bit left field but you need versatility with 6:2 so give him the nod over the likes of cam/ tdg/ muir.
Value in resting some for quins and saints or get the balance wrong between rested and battle hardened? Prob an individual by individual decision?
I agree that now we have battled to the semis it becomes number one focus for the next few weeks.
If we lose we have time and opportunity to refocus on the prem.
- This leaves them with only 23 senior players available
- Only 13 senior forwards are fit - and 4 of those are hookers - so limited options for reinforcing the pack from the bench
- Areas where they are thinnest are: LH (0 fit), SH (1 fit), SR (2 fit) and W/FB (3 fit)
I'm sure this would have been the case regardless of Quin's player availability, but going for forward dominance feels like the no brainer here. Our opponents can still put out a decent backline of Friday, Smith, David, Bradley, Northmore, Murley, Anderson, so don't want to get drawn into a loose game like last week. Forecast is looking a bit damp at the moment so could see a few more scrums, as good an opportunity as any for Archie to get his mojo back.
Quote:Francis Allen
I usually don't speculate on squad selection, I trust JVG to do that but if Beno and Sam are out aside from them I would favour a pretty much unchanged squad against Quins. Imho I would start strong and stamp our authority early. For Saints away I would rest all those expected to play against UBB and not give Saints the kudos of beating a full Bath squad. The subsequent gloating would be unbearable. Mentally any points gained against Saints would be a bonus and a loss would not be season defining. We are obvious underdogs against UBB but regardless of that result the Exeter away game becomes a must win game imho, a win there would make it easier to manage the squad for the final 3 Prem games so that we come first or second. Getting ahead of myself but really want to avoid Saints in a semi final.
You make a brilliant point here about not giving Saints kudos for beating us at full strength Francis Allen.
I had been a staunch advocate of playing our best 23, going for the win and building momentum into the semi-final, but I totally see your logic. In addition to giving Saints confidence ahead of the play-offs, it would be bad for the Cup Final 23 to go to Bordeaux having lost at Franklin Gardens.
On that basis I'd like to see JVG go with the team for Bordeaux against Quins (short-term injuries aside) and play the same game plan.
Always got the feeling he was underrated in England - not so in New Zealand and South Africa though.
All the best wishes to him and his family.
Quote:Bath Hammer
Having seen the myriad of suggestions as to team selection I’m relieved we can rely on JvG making the right choice.
Tbf none of the selections are bad and I’m sure whatever 23 hits the pitch they will perform. It just shows the current embarrassment of riches and how healthy they are (unlike Quins currently).
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
Everyone likes to see a strong team on paper every week with continuity but would be less keen on the injuries racking up and us blowing up with a month or two of the season to go.
I think freshness and rotation key tbh as we are well coached and have deliberately built our depth by trusting players.
Quote:BathRob
Feels like a game where Kirk, Moloney, Bernard vDL, Hennessy, and Green should get a start in - no disrespect to Quins but a home game against a team so depleted gives us more options with regards to bringing in players
……as long as we get our defensive set up in place because they still have a potent attack.
Going full-strength against Quins gives the Cup final team a run-out and 'should' guarantee 5 points.
Going no-strength against Saints gives the Cup final team a 2-week run-in to the Bordeaux game, whereas going full-strength or mixed strength away to Saints offers no guarantee of league points, and carries plenty of risks.

Is it sad? He is 35 he can't play in the Prem for ever. He has had a long and succesful career, including 70 England caps and gets to retire on his own terms. Doesn't get much better than that.

Here you go: 3 team predictions in one post.
Basically what most people have been saying, go strong v Quins, completely different starting 15s against Saints and Bordeaux, bit of a Bath Bomb Squad for Saints. That allows each team to train against the other (barring injuries) for two weeks. That being the case, perhaps the team for Saints should try to play like Bordeaux!!!
I'm in two minds about Lawrence: Is he on top form? Would Redpath/Ojomoh be better?

Love Lawrence, but think if I was picking a gun 23 right now I’m not sure if he’d get in.
- Ollie to find his form of last year to give us that edge in midfield.
- Scrum/lineout to improve significantly without Stuart
- Edge our discipline back to last years standard
I think our squad is better, our attitude is outstanding, our back row is performing really well and 9/10 are still top quality despite being quiet in the first half of the year.
Ollie is a top end but has never hit form this season- agree bathrob that it's a close call who to start with ar centre in the big games.
I maybe edge towards ollie for the BB game for his extra physicality.
I think next season hennessey will also be pressing very hard - big, quick, clever.... lots to like.

So, are we resting no one, allowing for a few injuries?
I guess Kepu, TDG, Joe C and Cam R and BVDL?

100% agree SW.

Agree it's a strong Quins side, but I think the fall-off in the last 30 minutes will be significant.
But agree that's a fine Quins XV. Lovely backline. They've a great squad, which if they get their coaching and injuries sorted, should be much higher on the log. On paper, I'd back the Quins first choice XV over maybe Tigers, Exeter, Saracens... shows how important coaching is. And a front 5!
Sooo playing "Let's Guess What JvG Is Planning" does this mean this is the XV for Bordeaux, adding in Beno and Roux, and Unders to the bench? Muir would be maybe my only question mark but JCok is ahead of him, for me.
Last year the fixtures well in such a way that we could do a 2 on 1 off rotation for the first team and it came together perfectly. This year we won’t have that luxury, so it’s more of a 33% off per game.
Either way, to me JvG has managed the squad this year incredibly well, to the point of even seeing Kirk start doesn’t worry me in the slightest.
Dangerous Quins team, but I back us 100% at home to get this done!
It's still 6 changes to the starting xv last week- kirk, richards, hill, alfie, mojo and big joe in.
I think it shows v little drop off and several tight selection calls re who is our first choice.
Still looks absurdly strong to me.
As with any prem fixture if the other team are on song and we are off our game it's a banana skin but we really should be winning this. I hope it's enough change that the 23 are fully refreshed and fully motivated with no thoughts on BB in a few weeks.
It will all come down to whether Quins can get any ball - if they do their backline with the backrow in support will cause trouble.
We need to work on our discipline this week. Sara Cox in the middle good to see her back doesn't feel like she has had many games this season.
Quote:Rawce
After Griffin took a bit of a pasting against Sale(?), surely this is the ideal game to give him back some confidence? I guess Saints know we won't be trying to take them on with our usual squad/tactics at their turf next week.
Totally agree with this. If we're working on the basis that the TH pecking order is now 1. TdT 2. Sela 3. Griffin then I'd much rather give Sela a complete rest this week. If we had picked Griffin then we could have asked him to stay on for as long as physically possible (assuming he was coping ok with Hobson/Clarke), maybe bringing on TdT right at the end to see things out.
I wouldn't necessarily want to do that with Billy, as it could potentially leave us with a totally exhausted 2nd choice TH as we enter this crunch period of the season.

Mind you , maybe not in a depowered pack next week.
Quins found a lot of gaps - especially early on-to open our defence.
It may of course be different this time, but we will need to be tight and dominant until the forward bomb squad comes on.

Is Sela ahead of Griffin right here, right now? It appears he will be pretty soon, but Griffin has built up some solid experience this year that could leave him edging it for a big game tomorrow?

I've just refreshed my memory of our Round 1 encounter with Quins at the Stoop.A high-scoring affair (31-47). 5 of our tries were from forwards (4 front rowers), all, including the 2 from Arundell were from close range.

If it does get fast and loose early on then I'm really hoping to see Santi Carerras having a great game in attack

I guess it's more of a hunch on my part, Sela has been trusted with the 3 shirt in some big games this season (Toulon away, Castres away, Saints QF) and has racked up 8 PREM/CC starts versus only 4 for Archie.
I'm no front row expert, to my eye it doesn't look like there's that much separating them, but potentially JvG & co have identified something in Billy that sets him apart.
Worth remembering that Archie has played a lot of international rugby this year, so could equally be the case that we're managing his workload as opposed to "dropping" him for the bigger games.
I think he & Archie may be sen as same level.

Don’t know much about the Quins team, but our front row concerns me. Will it be strong enough to gain at least scrum parity?
Hard to see anything other than a home win, but it won’t be a walkover. The big game is Exeter/Saints - if Chiefs win then we can nab top spot!
Are Quins resources really that thin in the back three or is it something that Quins think has potential against Bath. Possibly with Quins season over that selection and the one of CCS at lock are with a view to England? I certainly don't see Smith's position as bench 10/FB being strengthened by Furbank playing at FullBack for Quins next season so maybe Smith wants the chance now whilst he's got it to show what he can do there?
Quote:And Smith could run circles around Big Joe 😬Lankyman
Smith at fullback and big Joe on the wing reminds me of a “ rag doll “ match when the great Phil Bennett played at full back for Llanelli . Could have been a great plan if it wasn’t for Derek Wyatt on the wing for Bath, he barely broke stride as he ran over Bennet and went through to score .

Sometimes I read these threads and thing you Bath fans can be a touch arrogant! Then I read this one and the opposite is true! Quins have been awful this year, they even lost to Glaws! You will win and I imagine with a very big margin! I think your prem cup side would beat them.
I think we’re all wary of being the team who slips up - someone will and it’ll change the race completely. Hopefully it’s not us 😂

Quins are just in a rotten state right now. Ludicrous injury list and you could see by the end no one knew what the line out calls were and they were working it out on the hoof. Marcus Smith obviously decided by that point that going near contact was a waste of energy and a pointless risk so just started kicking everything and who could blame him

Felt bad for Arundell, didn't see the ball all game, moved to fullback, ball immediately goes to his previous wing for Bayliss to run down it and score.
He won’t forget that handoff from CCS for a while…

A lot of our problems I thought were self -inflicted. too many risky passes inviting intercept, plus excessive showboating & greed by Alfie and Santi.
Joe Co I thought played like a loose forward, contesting every ball and tackling like a demon. The best defensive performance from him for a long while. Agree about Charlie Ewels -commanded restarts and had a good all round game. Pepper did well too, in all phases of the game.
Two less positive notes - Quins kit looks rather kitch - reminds me of Eton Mess! Sadly also, there were several of their fans near me who were well "over refreshed" at the start, continued drinking steadily throughout the match and were quite obnoxious by midway through the second half. Not a great ad for a club I have always enjoyed visiting and watching.

* Santi is really laying claim to the full back jersey for the Bordeaux game
* We need Beno back ASAP
* We're still making way too many mistakes and can't keep relying on the bench to secure victory…
* …that said, we're almost impossible to live with in the second half – in the last five matches we've won the second halves 139-32
My MotM. Alex Dombrandt. In an injury weakened and thoroughly beaten side I thought he was just outstanding. Intelligent in the first half when it was still just about a contest then just grafted and grafted for his team doing whatever was necessary in the second while remaining a rallying point for his young players as captain throughout. Quality. I would LOVE to see him to play at 8 for us. We haven't had a really intelligent 8 for a while and I think it would lift us to a new level.
A word for the ref. Sarah Cox continues to set the standard for Prem refs. Really, really good.
... IMHO, of course.

Perhaps I am expecting too much but I thought our young props struggled against their 3rd/4th choice opposite numbers. The contrast when our bomb squad came on was huge but we”ll have neither of them next season & no Stewart until Christmas, just Bhatti. I fear that won’t be enough.
From memory, I think it was one penalty for each team when the starting props were on and the scrums looked pretty stable. We certainly weren't dominate for that period but I dont think we really struggled either.
The difference TDT and FVW made was ridiculous.

Bath playing like it's a pre season training run out and still winning with ease. Which is good for you in a way. The big call for you is how strong you go for saints? If you send a weakened side your top players won't have played a meaningful game for two weeks going into the semi final. Ideally you needed a much bigger test today than Quins could give you.

Quins fought well given their injuries before and during the game, hoping to see them able to be more competitive next season and with the cavalry back I’m sure they will be.

Yesterday highlighted how much weaker our front row will be next season, not being able to replace TDT is the biggest loss. Doesn’t look like we’ll have any form of bomb squad impact either.
Can’t see Max or Ollie playing next week and Max’s injury did look quite serious. Such a shame to get significant injuries in a game lacking any intensity.
Overall the game was flat from the start, the Bath win was inevitable, and Quins seemed to agree!

They almost certainly won’t be selected anyway but we need at least one of them available for the Bordeaux encounter & beyond. Fortunately we are strong at centre. If JvG plays the likes of BVdL, Donoghue, Tuipolatu, Bayliss, Muir, Underhill, Hill, Griffin (?), Hennessy, Redpath, TdG, the huge 19yr old lock, Coetzee etc. etc. we’ll give Saints something to think about!

Much of the crowd in front of me could stay in their seat for constant trips to the bar/loo with some people going multiple times per half. I know the club needs the revenue but it sure disputes the viewing of the match.

Fully agree. Given they were missing a lot of first choices I thought they played with determination, effort and cohesion. A 51/49 decision to chalk off a try might have gone the other way in other games and several lesser known players certainly enhanced their reputation

We have three or four regular offenders near us. I don’t think they’ve seen a kick off all season. Come in late (usually with a two pint cup) then guaranteed they’ll be off to the toilet midway through the half.
In defence of stewards it’s difficult to manage only allowing access during breaks in play. By the time they let people through the game has usually restarted once they get back to their seats
Not saying either side is necessarily right, just people getting up for a pint and a pee is inevitable
Quote:Widcombe boy
This probably needs feeding back to the club. The stewards need to stop people returning up the steps until a break in play . It’s not such a problem on the terrace but can imagine it’s a right pain if your seated
They do hold people until a break in play. Trouble is, by the time they make it back to the giddy heights of the back of the East stand, play is well underway again. And, if they're over-refreshed you can guarantee they'll be hanging about in the aisles trying to remember where their seat is!

I think it can make a difference. I recall watching on TV a game many years ago, I think involving a French team against Bristol at the Mem. It was typical British winter weather and you could see expressions of “Merde il pleut!” On the faces of the French team as they came out. Not only that but they were wearing a truly minging pink and brown strip which had probably been designed at great expense by a Parisian purveyor of haute couture but with no regard to rugby practicalities! The French knew that in nanoseconds it would be coveted in Bristolian mud and if ever a team’s body language said “we don’t fancy this, especially not wearing this kit” that was it!
Bath had a similar problem a few years back, something is amiss with Quins preparation, strength and conditioning, warm up, nutrition, it needs looking at.
