Stun Hartpury in Eight-Try Thriller

Goldington Road rediscovered its voice on Saturday afternoon as Bedford Blues mounted a stirring second-half comeback to defeat high-flying Hartpury 38–30 in one of the most entertaining games of the Championship season so far.

Trailing 14-24 at the interval, the Blues looked in danger of another frustrating afternoon. Yet, fuelled by relentless forward power and the unwavering roar of the home faithful, they stormed back to claim their first league victory of the campaign — and in dramatic fashion, with Dean Adamson’s last-minute try sealing a pulsating win.

Slow Start, Fast Finish

The visitors made the brighter start, capitalising on a shaky opening from Bedford. Hartpury’s Cai Gealy crossed early, with Harry Bazalgette adding the extras, before a sweeping move down the left doubled their advantage to 0-14

Bedford needed a spark, and it came from the pack. Archie Benson forced his way over from close range before Kayde Sylvester added a second try to level matters midway through the half. But just when the Blues seemed to have settled, Hartpury pounced again — Robbie Smith intercepting Alex Day’s pass to race clear under the posts, and a long-range Bazalgette penalty stretched the lead to 14-24 at the break.

The Fightback Begins

Bedford emerged from the changing room with renewed intent. George Worth finished smartly in the corner to cut the deficit, before Oisin Heffernan bulldozed over from short range. Will Maisey’s conversion brought the hosts within a single point at 26-27, and suddenly the Goldington Road crowd sensed the tide turning.

Hartpury briefly steadied the ship through another Bazalgette penalty, but the Blues’ bench made a huge impact. Replacement prop Joey Conway muscled over to give Bedford their first lead of the afternoon, though Maisey’s conversion drifted wide.

With the game in the balance and time ticking away, Bedford’s intensity never dropped. Their pressure finally told in the dying moments, when Benson turned over possession deep in Hartpury territory and Adamson finished brilliantly in the corner to seal a memorable victory. Maisey’s final kick made it 38–30 and sparked wild celebrations on and off the pitch.

A Statement Win

It was a performance full of character, determination, and belief. Forwards dominated the try column — four of Bedford’s scores came from the pack — while the replacements provided crucial energy late on.

Head Coach Mike Rayer praised his side’s resilience after the final whistle:

“We asked for a reaction, and the boys delivered it. Hartpury are a quality outfit, so to come back from 14 points down shows the spirit in this group. The crowd lifted us, and we’ll build on this.”

The result ends Hartpury’s unbeaten start to the season and moves Bedford up the table, a timely boost ahead of next weekend’s trip to Caldy.
