Up and Under with Coventry RFC's Luke Myring.

LAST weekend saw Rugby Union’s showpiece event, the World Cup final between New Zealand and France. It also saw a strong Macclesfield side make the trip to Coventry’s Butts Park Arena for a National League One clash.

One of these games was an exciting match with both teams truly trying to play rugby, producing a real spectacle. The other was the World Cup final!

The final of the World Cup reflected the tournament as a whole, a bit of an anti-climax with not a lot of rugby being played throughout.

It has been said the highest level of rugby is producing too many robots, each one just another cog in the machine, sticking to strict game plans and structures and very rarely thinking outside the box.

This definitely isn’t the case from my experience so far in National League One. Most teams attempt to play rugby freely and the players are given the liberty and responsibility to think and react to the situations in front of them. I’m not saying it’s perfect and there are mistakes but it’s refreshing to be a part of it.

Take our game from the weekend, which was an outstanding contest and a great win for us. It finished 36-25 with both teams claiming the four-try bonus point. Above that, both teams stepped onto the field with the intention to play rugby.

Kimbo is right (isn't he always, or so he'd have anyone within earshot believe). This is a good article and not only gives a very fair reflection on Saturday's game and the development of the group of players, but also pleads for a committed and consistent level of support (of which, to be fair, he's probably guaranteed)
Keep these postings coming, Luke. Like you, they're most welcome.

Interesting point made here by Luke - I agree but would say that although some of the WC games were tight, low scoring affairs, kept mainly up the jumper, they were still enthralling contests that made for edge of the seat viewing.

Having said that, Saturday's game was good to watch and well worth the admission money - keep it up lads!
