RUGBY director Phil Maynard attributed Coventry’s heaviest defeat of the season to a lack of accuracy in the execution of their game after a 45-14 mauling at Fylde.
Cov were well in contention at half-time, trailing 12-7 in a clash between the second and fourth-placed teams in National League One, but they fell away after the break and conceded five more tries as the impressive Fylde backs ran riot.
“We forgot the fundamentals, gave them too much space and simply missed too many tackles,” said Maynard.
“We planned to frustrate them and keep things tight, which we did in the first half, but we made some sloppy errors and gave the ball back cheaply. We just lacked accuracy in what we are doing.
“You have got to take your hat off to Fylde, they play their A game very well, but it was disappointing to see the way we played into their hands from a promising position.
“These things happen to us, we have a few injuries to key players and a very young side, and they will learn from this.
“It’s one of those performances we have got to put to put behind us quickly – we can’t dwell on it too much, and we have got to look ahead to what is now a very important game for us at home to Birmingham & Solihull next Saturday.”
