RUGBY director Phil Maynard labelled Cov’s 34-33 defeat at Richmond as ‘the most painful to take’ after they were sunk by a disputed penalty try on the final whistle.
Trailing 20-6 at half-time, Cov had battled their way back to lead 23-20 and 33-27 before the final play of the game, a reset five-metre scrum, saw referee Tom Davis award the home side a penalty try with Tom Platt’s conversion edging them back in front.
“We have no explanation as to why the try was given,” said Maynard. “In our eyes the ball was clearly out of the scrum, their No.8 lost control of it, we cleared it away, and then the referee ran under the posts.
“We weren’t going backwards and they weren’t putting us under any pressure – it’s so disappointing for the lads after the effort they had put in.
