Brett Daynes calls on Coventry to spoil Blackheath's party .

BRETT Daynes wants Coventry to dispel the gloom of consecutive lastminute defeats by raining on Blackheath’s parade this Saturday.

That has all but ended their pretensions of challenging near the top of National One but Daynes wants the Blue and Whites to put down a marker for next season, with a strong finish to this.

And that starts at Rectory Field where the hosts will be celebrating leading try scorer Dave Allen’s 200th game for the club.

But Daynes wants to spoil the party. “There’s going to be a big crowd, they are going to be right up for it and if we don’t turn up from the first minute there is going to be no point going down there,” the back-rower said.

“When we beat them at our place it was a tough game, they always like to play and move the ball but at the same time they have got a big forward pack too. It’s a good opportunity for us and a big game because we need to get back to winning ways.”

Especially after what has happed in the last couple of games, which have stalled what, after four wins in the New Year, was shaping up to be a promising campaign.

That momentum appears to have been lost now as Cov constantly keep finding themselves on the wrong side of small margins.

“To go from getting some good wins to losing the way we have in the last couple of weeks has been gut-wrenching,” Daynes said.

“Last week ate us up inside. It was like ‘What else do we have to do?’ But it was a rhetorical question, we know what we have got to do, put more points on the board, not miss kicks, not get a man sent off.

“You can sit and debate all night and throw loads of ideas about but it’s just a mindset thing. It’s about everyone getting their heads on, the top games against the top sides take care of themselves but anyone can beat anyone in this league and if you are not switched on you can come unstuck.”

But Daynes rejected the suggestion that kicker Cliffie Hodgson had been to blame for the Fylde loss.

The South African full-back acknowledged his four missed shots at goal had been decisive in a game that finished 24-23.

Daynes didn’t accept that explanation. “I don’t think it’s any individual’s fault, if you are going to look at it that way you would be pointing fingers at people after every match,” he said.

“Cliffie has been one of our outstanding players this season, for him to miss the small percentage he has over the whole year has been brilliant. We can only be happy with the way he has kicked.
