Teenager Ryan makes history for Coventry.

BACK row forward Michael Ryan wrote a new chapter in Coventry’s long history as he helped them end a run of three National League One defeats with a comprehensive 30-8 win at Blackheath.

The 19-year-old became the first player to come through the Henley College Rugby Development Centre programme and play for the club’s senior side when he went on as a second-half replacement at The Rectory Field.

A former Woodlands School pupil who played at Old Coventrians, Ryan is in his second year at Henley College under director of rugby Pete Glackin, Coventry’s backs coach.

Brought into Saturday’s squad at late notice when flanker Liam Munro went down with flu, he has another important engagement on Wednesday for Henley in a British Colleges Cup quarter-final tie.

“It was a great day for Michael and also for the club,” said Cov’s rugby director Phil Maynard. “It’s the product of a lot of good work from everyone involved over the last few years, and we hope he is the first of many to come through.”

Added Maynard: “It was a very good team performance today built on a hard work ethic, great defence and our ability to attack them through all channels.

Well done Ryan and Pete for the work put in at Henley, but credit to Henley for the help these lads get.
