Cipriani Odds On
By New Cherry
June 25 2018
Danny Cipriani's sublime kick under pressure at Newlands must fill us all with hope that the addition of a bit of class can finally shake Glaws out of the mid-table doldrums ..
We will gloss over the fact that it was a Cherry and White old boy who got on the end of that kick to win the game.
It's Danny boy we need to embrace as his undoubted class is something which we desperately need. He has a touch of class and a maverick spirit which can win tight games.
It's surprising then that the early rugby betting odds have us at 20-1 to win the Premiership when the likes of Chiefs are at 5/2 and Sarries at 7/4. Even Tiggers are at 10/1.
We are also bolstered by a host of exciting new signings including some South Africans who, as England are well aware, have some formidable talent.
Head coach Johan Ackermann has signed fellow South Africa internationals Franco Mostert and Ruan Dreyer from Super Rugby side Lions. Both worked with him when he was in charge of the Lions. Mostert, a lock, has 18 caps for the Springboks and , of course, was in the squad for the summer test series with England. Prop Dreyer, also 27, has four caps.
The South African connection continues with the signing of back row Jaco Kriel.
The 28 year old follows fellow South African, hooker Franco Marais, and Bath's former England back Matt Banahan in moving to Kingsholm.
Kriel has won 11 caps for South Africa since making his debut against Ireland in Port Elizabeth in 2016.
He missed the current Super Rugby season with a shoulder injury.
He’ll team up with former Munster lock Gerbrandt Grobler ahead of next season.
The 25-year-old South African joined the Irish side last summer after a spell with Top 14 side Racing 92.
"Over the past couple of seasons, Gerbrandt has developed into a top quality second row and made a big impression during his time at Racing and Munster," director of rugby David Humphreys said.
"We are excited to add another young, dynamic forward to our squad."
The 25-year-old Munster last summer after a spell with Top 14 side Racing 92 and according to Director of Rugby David Humphreys has developed into a top quality second row and made a big impression during his time at Racing and Munster.
We have also signed hooker Todd Gleave from London Irish. He's 23-year-old with 13 appearances for the Exiles over the past two seasons after coming through their Academy
In addition, promising fly-half Lloyd Evans has signed a new contract. The former England Under-20 international has scored 29 points in his 13 first-team games since making his Premiership debut in 2015.
All of that makes odds of 20/1 look very generous indeed.
