April 26 2010

Quins A team will take on Leeds Carnegie A tonight in the Guinness A League semi-final. Kick Off is 1930pm at The Stoop.

The team is a mxture of experience and Academy with some of the players who were in action on Saturday at Welford Road back in action again.

This could well be the last time we see some of these players playing at The Stoop as they may be leaving this summer and the A League Final is definitely going to be an away one if Quins win tonight.

Please turn up in your thousands next Monday to support our brilliant A team in the Guiness A Semi final against Leeds on Monday, 7.30 at the Stoop. If you have never been to an A game before, you will be in for a treat. These are always great matches and quite different from the First XV matches. It is good to be able to see our young players (and last week we had 2 schoolboys in the winning team) and appreciate the talent we are nurturing.

There is open seating in the LV= stand, free admission for STHs and the bar is open for food and drinks. It will be a great evening.

I'll be there. I only started going to A-games last season and I enjoy them almost as much as the 1st XV matches. The games are much more free-flowing with much more running play and very few penalty kicks at goal.

Leeds team for this evenings game ( from their website)

It is the first time ever that any Leeds A team has reached this stage of the competition and Simon Middleton's side are just 80 minutes away from booking an incredible Grand Final appearance.
Quins finished top of the Southern Conference and are former Champions at this level. Leeds inlcude a number of players who will be looking to sign off their time at the club with a victory included Joe Ford and Scott Armstrong who are off to Northampton next season and the half back pairing of Joe Bedford and Jason Strange, who the club announced would be leaving Headingley Carnegie during the summer.

The side will be skippered by Jon Pendlebury with Tom Denton, the man who kicked the ball out of play against Worcester to seal victory starting in the second row.

The team in full is:

15 Joe Ford
14 Richard Welding
13 Jonny Hepworth
12 Ollie Denton
11 Scott Armstrong
10 Jason Strange
9 Joe Bedford
1 Cameron Zeiss
2 Vili Maasi
3 Peter Bucknall
4 James Craig
5 Tom Denton
6 Jon Pendlebury (c)
7 Jacob Rowan
8 Ollie Steadman
16 Phil Nilsen
17 Gareth Hardy
18 Alex Moreno
19 Alex Ball
20 Joe Barker
21 Dan White
22 James Twomey
23 Rob Almond

Quins include former Leeds Carnegie Academy player Sam Stitcher in their squad. Stitcher left Leeds to join Esher two years ago but plays for Quins as part of the relationship between the two clubs. The starting line up includes some familiar faces in the likes of Nils Mordt and Josh Drauiniu.

Mordt, Karl Dickson, Lewis Stevens, Aston Croall, James Johnston, and Chris York all played against Leeds in the recent Guinness Premiership defeat at the Stoop after coming on off the bench.

And ..... no incidents of aerial ping-pong this week or last week.

Good Luck in the final boys.

Darryl Marfo is a first year academy lad and played very well when he came on. He's a tighthead usually but has been playing loosehead for Richmond recently, and that's where he played when he came on tonight. I have a feeling that the club may persist with him at loosehead as we have an inbalance with plenty of tightheads.

Mantella is a Millfield schoolboy and used to play in the same team as Ollie Lindsay-Hague.

Marler again outstanding. He is going to be very good. Could be a break through player next year like Lowe has been this season. Will also be a big favourite with the supporters given his aggressive attitude. As QP said, many played well though the line out badly misfired and we were hopeless at restarts.

Back three all went very well, including Millfield schoolboy Miles when he came on. Seb Jewell exuded confidence and it would be good to see him get a chance in the GP.

Great turn-out of mostly Quins supporters, unsurprisingly. Very appreciative crowd who gave standing ovations at half and full time and to individuals being replaced. Must say Neil McMillan did a brilliant job captaining the game and looked completely knackered when he came off. Hope he recovers by next Monday!

Well done everyone - squad, coaches and supporters! A brilliant evening's rugby. Good luck for next Monday at Welford Road. I went when we had the final there a few years back but, sadly, cannot go next week.

Seb was superb. No idea why we haven't played him more. Biggles kicking was excellent - he kicked a couple of really tricky conversions.

Casson looked very good too.

This was my second A league game and I reckon the trip to Welford Rd will be well worth it.

Very little kicking; plenty of running rugby from both sides - if anyone reading this hasn't been to an A league game then I highly recommend that they do.

who scored the penultimate try, when luvenyali threw a bad pass behind the other runners, so one of our guys had to scamper back, but then jinked through about 4 tackles to score an excellent solo try. think it was casson, mantella or olh. anyone know?

great game. last week i thought the pack were immense and whilst they still were this week, i think the backs stole the show. another good showing from dickson, clearly intent on proving me wrong!

According to the offy, Mantella scored the penultimate try.

What I didn't realise, is that if we had scored 2 more tries over the competition, we would have had a home final. Oh well.

I just hope that the boys who picked up knocks last night are fit enough to play next week and we can do some tigger taming!

I don't know. I looked at the tiggers site this morning and they said that they had scored 45 to our 43.

Think 43 is a pretty good achievement though! Hopefully we'll see a few more next Monday!
