Harlequins v Newcastle Falcons: Teams and Updates

Last Saturday’s victory over Exeter Chiefs, in front of a jubilant home crowd, was a much needed boost for the London side and one which not only took them up into mid-table territory, but also got the team back to winning ways.
With tomorrow’s game being the last before the Amlin Challenge Cup kicks off, and the English clubs take a break from Aviva Premiership Rugby, Quins will be keen to come away on Saturday with a good result and a strong table position.
Conor O’Shea has made only one change to the side that ran out at the Stoop last Saturday. Tom Williams returns from a one match injury absence, to replace 19 year old Ross Chisholm on the bench.
Joe Marler, Matt Cairns and James Johnston link together once again in the front row, with Ollie Kohn and Tomas Vallejos joining in the second row. After making their joint 100th appearance last week, Captain Chris Robshaw and Will Skinner take up their familiar positions on the flank, with Nick Easter taking the driving position at the back of the scrum.
In the backs, Danny Care and Nick Evans continue as a formidable 9 - 10 duo, and Jordan Turner-Hall and Ollie Smith continue to build their centre partnership. George Lowe and last week’s man of the match, Gonzalo Camacho, add the pace on the wings, with Mike Brown watching over things at full-back.

Alan Tait has today named his squad for Saturday’s Aviva Premiership Rugby match against Harlequins at the Stoop.
Tait has made sweeping changes to a squad that was heavily beaten by London Irish last week. Tait welcomes into the starting 15; Will Welch, Luke Fielden, Jeremy Manning, Chris Pilgrim, Robert Vickerman and Grant Shiells.
Manning takes the place of Alex Tait at Fullback, whilst Chris Pilgrim comes in for Micky Young, Luke Fielden is in for Gcobani Bobo and rounding of a much changed back line, Rob Vickerman is in for Luke Eves.
The forwards did not escape the changes with Grant Shiells, making his first start of the season, and Will Welch replacing Jon Golding and Brent Wilson.
On the bench we have last week’s starters Jon Golding, Micky Young, Luke Eves and Alex Tait. They are joined by Mark Wilson, Joe Graham, Kieran Brookes and Glen Townson.
With the disappointment of last week behind them the Falcons are looking to return to winning ways and Alan Tait feels he has the team that can do it.

Please let's not count any Falcons before they are hatched, but I would honestly be hoping for a five point haul after seeing last week's relative performances.

Wow, I thought Ollie Smith might be out for some time when I saw him go off last Saturday. Really pleased it's not serious.

Good team, pleased with the starting front row. It seems to be have been our strongest combination so far this season. Shame not to see any of our crocked locks back, but soon hopefully, Vellejos has been playing well, but it would be good to see Danger on the team sheet. A bit surprised TW didn't get a start, but I guess this is the settled (for the moment) team as it is the same as last weeks.

They seem determined to put Ollie Smith in the side. Personally I'd have GL at 13, and Tom Williams at 11. With Smith on the bench.

I'm glad to see Smith and Williams both back from injury. I'm a bit surprised not to see Robson or Stevenson on the bench but Browne has been playing well while given the chance. Andress must be in the mix soon too after his matches in the A League

Will be good to get Lewis back. Will be even better when Percy is available again. Having said that, Vallejos had a storming game last week, and long may that form continue.
I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable about our squad, especially during the England games.

4 or 5 pts tomorrow we will be in the top 6, and before the 1st minor break, you would sum up as OK. If we lose then its a poor start.

Clearly the coaching staff are being thoughtful about selection off the back of last Saturday - and indeed our start to the season. Smith must be 100% or they wouldn't risk him. As for some comments about our crocked locks - both Steveson and Robson are fit (infact Lewis was fit for last Saturday), but not selected. Credit due to Ollie and Tomas - and Browne. All 3 in their different arenas (1sts, Bench and A League for the Rev) have done well. All the chat about a big bad lock needed, looks inappropriate when yoou consider who we already have.

Heath Quinn - Personally I'm quite happy to see George Lowe on the wing.
He's arguably our best finisher. Although Smith and JTH have been unspectacular so far, I'd rather they did the hard work in the middle and we had Smith's experience on the field.
IMHO we look a less dangerous team with Williams on the pitch.

Interesting point of view. I actually think Williams is a better all-round player than the pair of them, and has a much more complete game. I would say he's more dependable, if less spectacular.

Casson couldn't get a game last year for Bedford or nottingham and has never played a GP match or any game of note for quins.....so not quite sure of the urgency to see him in the 1st team...
If robson was fit I am sure He will come in for kohn he looks overweight and has been way of any pace so far this year.
Playing lowe on the wing when Williams is fit is a bit of a mystery, still roll on 3pm sat and it better be a win as I have turned down all areas pass for ryder cup tomorrow!

George Lowe makes things happen regardless of where he plays. I'd prefer to see him at 13, but would have him on the wing in front of all but a top form Ugo. Also, I'm not sure why Lowe would not be considered dependable compared to TW.

TW is dependable in all areas of the game: attacking, defending, kicking, and plays very well at FB. He's not sensational, but plays a high level with great consistency. Lowe is and excellent strike runner with great pace, but doesn't yet have the all-round game that TW has.
I would think this week's selection is partly to give Ollie Smith game time, and also to stick with the winning team.

I'd say TW is no better in attack or defence to GL, and the fact he can play full back has little relevance to any comparison.
