The saintly horde embarked on this quest having already conquered many foes. The only blight on their record of conquest being a spanking at the hands of the Saracens horde in their own citadel , and that only assisted by the gods (of pearson) who looked darkly upon the saints that day.
So with typical courage and endeavour they embarked upon their latest quest , travelling from places far afield , such as King’s Thorpe and Hun’s berry, they gathered in their thousands to mount their latest assault by travelling to the place on the map that was marked in fear…..” Here be Dragons”.
So dear reader how do you tame your dragon ?
On the island of FG, which is beset by dragons that raid their stock of guiness, the Saintly chief Mallinder the wise’s protege Dowson works as a back row. Dows is undersized compared to the average back row, and doesn't have the international skills of others his age. (according to Johnno the thick) Although the boy is unorthodoxly inventive, he is also notorious for being destructively skilful.
In the face of this disdain, Dows desperately seeks to become a dragon-slayer in order to not only earn his father's respect, but also impress Johnno, a competent, aggressive young teenaged girl on whom he has a crush. (poetic license here in extremis) To accomplish these goals, Dows plans to attempt to defeat a Newport, a rare and greatly feared dragon that has never been seen clearly let alone defeated by the Saints, with a tactic of his own design.
During one of the dragons' raids on FG, Dows manages to down a Newport, but he has no witnesses to the feat (as the crowd have fallen fast asleep) and his accidental ruining of the team’s defenses discourages anyone from taking the rest of the game seriously. Attempting to get proof, Dows goes to the referee. He decides to contest the scrum, but cannot bring himself to do such a task.
In order to wipe them out and finish the game Dows instructs his troops to stop the terratorial battle and take the fight to the Dragons. The Newport is still trapped in it’s own territory, and Dows observes that it is missing a part of its squad due to injury and international call ups, leaving it unable to play properly. Dows feels sorry for the dragon, which he names Toothless (based on its retractable teeth), and eventually fashions an artificial game plan. While helping Toothless play again, Dows gains an extensive appreciation of dragons. With this knowledge, Dows is able to progress in dragon combat to the amazement of the crowd and the jealousy of Wavey, who becomes strongly suspicious. He is given a book by the fourth official that contains much knowledge of the different tactics of dragons that assail the spirit of the game, but his own interactions with Toothless leads him to conclude that the species is seriously misunderstood.
When Dows earns the right to kill the dragon as a graduation rite, he decides to leave it at three tries because Toothless had only managed three points during the entire battle and those had been gifted by the god Wavey rather than being earned by valour.
At the end of the day, Dows throws away the bonus point and tries to show everyone that dragons are not as bad as they seem. Misunderstanding what their captain is attempting, the crowd shout to stop the battle before Dows can continue, and the agitated dragon, Toothless is still beaten by the Saints.
Dows begins to regret sparing Toothless' life, but with Mallinder’s prodding, he then discovers that he was merciful towards Toothless because of compassion and empathy, not weakness.
The crowd then realise that a win is a win and depart for their homes in the knowledge that the fortress of Franklin is a safe haven for another week at least. (I guess you just had to be there)
