Will Bristol never learn?

Leeds Carnegie entertained Bristol today in the final round of the group stage of the B & I Cup. Leeds needed a bonus point to ensure passage into the last 8. In the end the visitors gifted Leeds the win to ensure not only a place in the last 8 but a home tie to boot. Bizarre? If I was a Bris fan I would be spitting feathers!.....
The game started fairly even. When Leeds were awarded a penalty Hughes obliged with 3 points. The home pack did not have an easy afternoon but early on put in a vigorous stint which ended with Smith crashing over for the first try. Hughes duly converted and we were 10 points up. The first half was reaching it's conclusion when Bris managed to conjure up an overlap ( with Vickerman miles out of position) for an easy try in the corner. The conversion was missed so we turned round 10-5 in front. I omitted to mention the kickable penalties which were awarded to Bristol, which ,if they had been aimed at the sticks, would have seen Bris turn round in front. No, the visitors went for position instead which resulted in "null points"
Jacob sometimes makes a wrong decision but generally our team/squad/management get it right. We take the points on offer. I consider it disrespectful of the visiting coach to turn down the kickable penalties, presumably because he thinks his team can win just by scoring tries. They can score tries. Today they scored 3 good tries, ripping our defence to shreds but......
Leeds kept the scoreboard ticking over with another try by the effervescent Griffin and penalties converted by the boot of Hughes
Bristol got within a score of us but a late penalty from Hughes followed by a disciplined run down of the clock by the forwards saw the home side get the win they needed.
Why do Bristol shun the points on offer? I can only surmise that it is part of some masterplan to get them into the AP. Will they shun kickable penalties in the play-offs? Well I for one hope that they don't even get to the play-offs.
Enough of the visitors what about our team? Lots of experimental positional selection on offer today. I was worried about Myerscough playing at 6 but he had a towering game - hard running, solid tackling and sweet lineout ball! Baby Doc looked feisty and sharp, against, arguably, the best 9 in the league. Hampo will be back next week but Doc had a great game. Griff took my MoM honours with his hard running, solid tackling, a good try and his general desire to be involved in the action. Vickerman and Clarke need more game time as they both looked off the pace but will both be an asset at the business end of the season.
We will play better than we did today but you can only beat what is in front of you. Beating Bristol is getting to be a habit. A good habit at that. Long may it continue.

we have to be more concerned about giving them the choice in the first place

Well, I rather hoped Leeds would get to the play-offs. Having read this contemptuous report, the feeling has become mutual, and I rather hope you don't.
What you wish for, and what you get are rarely the same. The fact that Bristol won't take the points they are offered, because they think they are better than that, is costing them dearly. I know their fans aren't happy, and I'll bet the players aren't too pleased either. This will lead to a lot of discontent, and that will do the team no favours whatsoever.
The best side won, (again), today, and I certainly have no fears when Leeds play Bristol next time around. The Leeds side then, will be considerably stronger than it was today.
Completely uncalled for.
Miserati - and Proud to be!
One thing I did take issue with, though, was that I thought Clarke had a great game.
Suffering on the Leeds and Yorkshire roller-coaster since 2001
We'll both be in the play offs and if all Bris have to do to beat us is start kicking their penalties towards the posts rather than the touchline then, from our point of view, this is surely not a good thing.
For me, any team who chooses to kick to touch against us is more than welcome as I believe we have the best backs to the line defence in this league - by a mile.
I'm afraid I was a little embarrassed when I read the title of this article.
Don't start a thread that is headlined "Arrogant Bristol" and goes on to call them "arrogant" again in the article along with "cocky" and then goes on agaon to repeat the tired stuff about Bristol being the biggest club (something that I have only heard from Leeds, not Bristol incidentally).
That strikes me as not just something that sensitive Bristol souls can get chippy about. It seems like something designed to get a reaction. Please don't try and defend it as a serious discussion about Bristol's current approach to the game.
Only a couple of disappointments for me today, and I have to say, I hope Smith and Myerscough are fit for next week. Possibly the one area where we don't have a lot of influential cover.
COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

This 'biggest club' thing comes from Bristol supporters, on the Bristol message board stating over and over again how they are too big a club to be in the Championship. It has even appeared during this last week. Read your message board.
I will not be going to Leeds for the league match in March now as this is the kind of welcome that can obviously be expected.
COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.
Is there really any need for this ongoing trolling of Bristol fans and their club? It doesn't make us look good.
But that we are too big for the Championship appearing on our board, where is that and what was the context? There are statements saying we need to be out of this league and that we've been here too long, I would agree. But that's not the same as 'too big'. We've got a successful AP club a few miles away with an owner keen to expand his 'customer' base, Glos up the road, Exeter not too far away, Worcester are even closer. If we want to do more than survive or decline we need to be in the top division. It's as simple as that. None of which says that anyone thinks we are too big.
I think that many Bristol supporters would agree that the policy of kicking virtually every penalty to touch is an odd one and yes it has clearly lead to us losing games we could have won. It also allows teams to give away kickable penalties secure in the knowledge that they have the chance to defend a lineout or, sometimes, a scrum. But I fail to see how that indicates arrogance or being cocky. If Leeds have a really good defence against the rolling maul then how else are we going to test ourselves against it? There is only so much you can do on the training ground. If the league season (and don't forget the yesterday was the B&I which a lot of people see as a fairly meaningless competition) is in reality a glorified preseason before you get down to the play-offs (yes, assuming one gets there) then it actually seems to make sense to try out different moves and tactics in real match conditions. You might say that smacks of overconfidence that you'll pick up enough league points anyway but I'd refute accusations of arrogance.
If the object was to wind up Bristol supporters then success.
If the object was to shed a poor light on Leeds fans then you have also achieved success.
All fans of rugby are welcome to Leeds and Yorkshire.

I really don't know why we are winding them up, IMHO their fans and team are a credit to the second tier (as hopefully we are).
Had fun with the Bris lot today. Terry had fun too although he was offered chocolate at one point!
Let's do our talking on the pitch, although I know the Bris players weren't happy with the result yesterday, why remains to be seen!

It must be very frustrating for the Bristol supporters to have to watch their team squander winning opportunities. And to some degree I have sympathy with those supporters whilst at the same time grateful to their teams folly in handing us two wins against them.
From our point, the penalty count against us is unacceptable. Other teams in our league will not be so gracious and will punish us. I hope that having scraped a win, the coaches will review this game and address the indiscipline within the team. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
As it is I did enjoy watching a very competitive match in which both teams showed flashes of brilliance.
Game itself was entertaining - both sides strung together some very good attacks but our defence had the edge (I know we conceded one soft try, one well worked try, and one 'lucky bounce' try - but overall, Bristol had plenty of attempts that we held firm against)
And yes, they didn't kick the penalties. Odd choice, but that's good for us. In fact, knowing this we could risk infringing and trust the defence to keep them out...
Still a Tyke - whatever the name!
Thanks for putting the mockers on what was, apart from the first bit of the second half, an entertaining game and some good banter.
Back to on pitch matters, I thought Baby Doc played a blinder - best shift for us in a long time. Perhaps Lowes' management of him is playing off.
Any one thought Plug was captain? I had to check my programme such was his manner and chit chat.
If Andy Robinson directs his team not to take the points; that's his choice. It's might to come back and bite him on the bum when Bristol are 2 points behind with 1 minute to go in a play-off match or even the last round of the league to get a play-off berth. They get a penalty, it'll be the last kick of the match, the kicker misses as he's not had the opportunity to practice the live, in-game management of his nerves under such pressure.
Bristol supporters, please do not see such sentiment as common amongst us and continue to feel welcomed at Headingley.
I vote that the moderators remove the review.

I have not posted for some time but this moved me to register my complaint with other Leeds supporters. I do not wish to be associated with such provocation. I hope this attitude does not spread to the terraces or it will be like going to a football match and many will stop attending.

I second that motion.
I don't think choosing to play in a certain way at this stage of the season implies any disrespect to the opposition, and I'm certainly grateful for the home QF it gave us.
BTW I thought Jon Clarke had a good debut. He stood up well in the tackle and looked to offload a la Greenwood. The others will soon start to read his game and play off him. Agree about RV's strange positioning for the first try.

After the reaction and subsequent modification of the report I've changed my mind again. Leeds will be in the play-offs and, IMO, will get promotion. Good luck to you all.
good to see that the majority of people posting are all in agreement that the original article was trolling
good luck to leeds, am sure we will meet you again at some point this year

Well I for one hope that they don't even get to the play-offs.
Clearly the intent of the article has barely been masked, it's not good enough.
I hope that in time your anger will mellow and that you will in future consider traveling to Leeds. We welcome all supporters wherever they come from on this little planet of ours. After all it does help to swell our rather meager crowds. We can't all be a Bristol in our support although that is something to aspire to.
When you do decide to pay us a visit. Wander over to the South Stand and introduce yourself to us lemonheads that assemble there and enjoy the banter and our hospitality. You know, we are at not all that bad really.

Thanks. I appreciate your advice. However, someone at Bristol should put this person to task. No matter how much you disagree or are angry at comments or decisions, we are a Rugby community and as such have standards. These do not include vitriol.
Angry. Yes!
Vitriol. No!
I too was in the crowd that saw Bristol throwing away possible points, which having been taken would have resulted in a different result. I want Leeds to win every time. However a win by virtue of the good grace of the opposition suggests another name to any victory.
I hope that whatever happens, I am not a witness of similar.

In response I'd enquire as to why you do not put your Admin to task? As the above edit shows, the intent is plain as day albeit with slightly less intense language which seems to be getting a free pass. As I've said, the situation is not good enough for such a high profile forum.
I'd say mine is a fair reaction to such an inflammatory article, pray tell what is so wrong in voting with my wallet and encouraging friends to do the same until an apology is issued and the article removed? I'm interested in how you come to the conclusion that is vitriolic? Also keep in mind the abuse and trolling has been coming our way all season.
Have I used insults like the article here? No. Have I lost my temper? No. To be brutally honest I cannot see where I have been vitriolic in relation to the piece. I've calmly stated what I believe is a fair response and made clear how I'd like to see this whole kerfuffle resolved.
Open to any discussions on my stance. Just because I appreciate and like a few of the Leeds fans who spoke out against the article it doesn't mean I'm going to ignore everything. Of course they are not personally responsible, that much should be obvious.
All the best and looking forward to your response.
Suggest we give it a rest and move on.
What he said, please for the love of God, can we move on??!!
