Take a break!

Yorkshire Carnegie travels to Jersey on Friday evening for a B&I cup game as we reach the first break in the championship season. This provides an opportunity for us to take stock of the season so far...

Two factors which we knew would be an issue for us this season have already proved to be so. Our defeat at London Scottish on the opening day of the season, when we looked very rusty ( a result of not having played any pre-season games) has been the Exiles only win this season and they are second bottom of the table above Rotherham. The imbalance of positions in our small squad has been quickly exposed with the suspension of Green and the injuries to both halfbacks early in the game at Richmond. Starting a game without 9/10 cover on the bench is not ideal.

Having said that we have had good wins against  Donny, Nottingham and Pirates and were unlucky to only draw at Hartpury. The club is sixth in the league after six games and our next league game is at home to fifth placed  Bedford at the end of the month. All things considered we are pretty much where I thought that we would be when the season started.

For the trip to Jersey J-Lo must blood some youngsters. Alex Davies has been playing with an injury. He should be rested in the cup games. We cannot afford to get any more key men injured. The cup is not important in this transitional season. Play only fit players and, if we do not have enough of them then borrow some.

With the ponderous state of the squad I do not expect a win on Friday night so I am going for a home win by 15 points.

Good to see so many getting a game. Tough ask but I bet they give it some.
Seen a bit of davey and bullough and they look decent players. Hopefully this will give the coaches the confidence they can cope with the championship too.

Pleased that Buckle & Watkins are making the trip - both great lads who are always welcome in St Ouen. Let's hope for a fine night and a well matched game with no injuries.

Don't kick it pick it up and GO FORWARD

Slightly ironic that, in a season when we all know who is going to win promotion out of the Championship, the B&I Cup for once could have provided a genuine competitive competition. However, the high injury toll experienced by many clubs at various levels so far this season means that it merely represents the breathing space between the first and second quarters of the season.

Add to this the ongoing problem of combining a competitive and franchise system in one competition. Experience shows that Irish teams can muster fantastic resources if required.

ALMO.

That's because rugby union in Ireland (North & South) is extremely popular and the talent is available to the various district sides as required.
Second and third string rugby is of a very high standard, so the 'step up' if and when called isn't too onerous.

When did we last have Irish opposition....if at all?

I recall Scots & Welsh, but am struggling to recall any Irish side meeting us in the B&I.

Two years ago Carnegie played Munster A where Shinfield made his debut on a very wet and windy Friday night in Kinsale.

We lost in the final to Leinster "A" at Donnybrook, Dublin, a few years back and I remember another match whereby the Irish province (I think Munster) played their first team Heineken Cup match in the afternoon and the unused subs turned out against us in the evening.
