It was good to see something close to the “real Sarries” last weekend and back to winning ways with a 5 pointer. This weekend the team heads North to the frozen wastes of Geordieland to take on Newcastle Falcons, currently propping up the other 9 teams in the league. Falcons are now the only team without a win this season so in theory this should be a somewhat easier task than Tigers but Sarries haven’t always faired well “up north”. True Sarries have apparently not lost to Newcastle since 2009 but there’s always a first time and I’m sure they won’t be taking anything for granted. I still remember going to Kingston Park back in 2003 when a hard fought loosing bonus point all but secured premiership survival. How times change!
Mark McCall has said he has been impressed with Newcastle this season despite their results. Falcons have some dangerous backs including Adam Radwan and the “Mats” (Carreras, Orlando and Moroni) and some useful forwards (Callum Chick, Jamie Blamire) not to mention a couple of former Sarries in Eduardo Bello and Elliott Obatoyinbo. They suffered a heavy defeat to Quins last weekend and were well beaten by Bath on the opening weekend but otherwise results have been much closer losing by just 2 points to Saints and 4 points to Gloucester (albeit both games at home).
It was encouraging to see a more dominant scrum last week plus the emergence of Sarries’ very own “Bomb Squad”. I doubt if we’ll see Mawi just yet though – no official updates on his injury but it didn’t look great. Four tries last weekend was encouraging but all scored by forwards! It would be great to see the backs getting in on the action too.
Any hope of continuity of selection has gone out of the window with the news that Maro, Faz, Ben and Jamie are apparently on leave this week (OK they deserve a bit of downtime) but there is also the exciting prospect of seeing Lucio Cinti and Juan Martin Gonzales in the line up. Mark McCall has said that all 13 of his World Cup Squad players will get a break over the next couple of months.
“Over the next few weeks everyone will get a week off. Everyone knows their individual plans, we need to make sure that those who had a heavy physical and emotional load are looked after. We gave them the option to choose what suited them and their families so they all know what the schedule looks like. It says a lot about them, they’ve always been wanting to come back straight away and have thrown themselves back in. There is a trust between them and us that we’ll look after them, but last week it was great to have them and they all played very well.”
So who will we see on the pitch on Sunday? I suspect Mako, Theo Dan and maybe Cleary in the front row, Tizard and Isiekwe at lock and Christie, Gonzales and probably Willis in the back row. Aled Davies has had 2 good games at 9, hardly putting a foot wrong, but it might be time for Ivan Van Zyl to start. The big question is who plays 10? With cover at full back I think we might see Goode wearing 10 with Cinti and Maitland on the wings, Loz and Tompkins at centre (unless Tompkins finally gets a break in which case Daly could line up there) and Daly (or Parton) at full back.
The defence will need to be on their toes and tackles will need to be made but assuming we pick up from where we left off last week, that should be enough for the win.

Excellent preview, very interested to see our approach for this one.
I can't say Goodey has run the ship particularly well from 10 when asked this season, but I'd be far more confident if someone like Daly were able to aid him from fullback. Van Zyl too (although Aled has been rock solid 2-weeks running). Agree that Tommo needs a rest - I've been impressed with Hartley, but think he would shine running off Faz and his passing game, so maybe not this week.
I'm very interested to see how our back 3 shapes up this season. Lewi has been comfortably our best winger so far IMO so would be happy to see him start this weekend. Sean is still IMO one of our most under-rated wingers, and deserves to be mentioned alongside Stretts, Ash and Wylesy, but I would guess this is his final season with us. Obviously no Max anymore, and Roti is in what feels like a 'now or never' season. I'd argue Daly was our first choice 15 until his injury last season, and with Goodey winding down, I'd assume that's also the plan this year, unless Parton has anything to say.

Like others I am excited to see the Pumas players but equally I'd be happy with them brought in from the bench as they learn the systems.

Having watched JMG closely in the World Cup, he could develop into something very special. A much delayed replacement for Rhoadesy perhaps. Can’t wait to see him in action.

Great to see Clarey given a start and West back.
Also good to see Manu and Simpson on the bench and looking forward to Goodes "wise-head" at 10.
Looking forward to seeing both our Pumas for the first time.
Slight concern with only two locks in that 23 but that is more about whether those missing are on holiday (Maro) injured? or resting? rather than about the selections.
I know Falcons have a had a tough start to the season but I am sure we won't be under-estimating the threat they can pose.
Safe journey to all who travel and hoping for a good result.

Great first half from the team today. I was nervous that we would drop off after last week when the returning England Players seemed to make a huge difference in the speed of execution, but the energy has been great and the drive from all the team. Gonzalez looks great fitted in with Willis and Christie, and Dan is having a huge game. Being picky I would like a little more creativity from the backs but that will come.

Very good all round performance against what is one of the Premiership’s weaker sides. But we coped well with just the one lock (Tizard) and the likes of Christie and Dan were dangerous all game. I was impressed by JMG who looks a powerful unit and Tom W made many a hard yard. To be fair I thought our backs stepped it up a gear from previous weeks and I like Daly at fullback as he adds some much needed pace. 5 points and a happy trip home.

Good performance on the road and great to see attacking intent and defensive determination. PRTV game MoM to Christie who played well, but thought Theo was excellent along with Willis, JMG. Cinti had some pace on wing when he came on, too. Hope big Al Clarey is ok, our front row looks more solid at scrum time with him and Eroni.
Tough game next week lads, am sure we’ll see Faz, Maro, Ben and Jamie back.

Agree with much of the above, although I thought that was comfortably our best attacking display. Perhaps not attackingly clinical, but I thought Daly looked excellent from fullback, as did Lewi. Excited to see more of Cinti, but I thought JMG could’ve been close to MotM, which I probably would’ve given to Theo or Willis.

Went down just as we found our seats. The "team" were defending against the reserves and I think he took a twist to his knee. In considerable pain and down for some time. In the cup at Cov and v Glaws he seemed to have lost his spring in lineouts and I wondered whether he was carrying a problem. Then by the Bath game he seemed to have recovered.
Agree with all the names above; so many had very good games. Gonzales my MoM too - what a find, though Christie and Willis shone, as did Dan and Tizard, the latter exceptional in our strong defence. Dan's throwing (to no Locks - I don't think Tiz jumped once) was on the mark every time and bringing me belatedly to his fan club, especially now he's not playing cannon ball every 2 minutes. 10/Q/K very strong, quickly forward in defence, Daly seeking the ball and retaining in contact.
Very sad to see Falcons decline; their fans deserve and need better. We simply dominated physically for too much of the game. Following Leeds decline, rugby can't afford to lose another top side from the North. 6.4k after so little recent success, and on a bleak day shows there is an appetite for our game and the potential to fill one of my favourite stadiums.

If you’ve got Maro, Christie and Gonzalez on then no need for Billy to be lifted. Just like when Skelton played for us. Mind you, La Rochelle started lifting Skelton last season, quite a sight, my back exploded just watching that!

TBH with Big Theo in the team that's enough as he's so athletic. I could definitely see Billy as an emergency option being used again, it would certainly increase our carrying!

Lineout is a strength of Sarries but we have others to focus on whilst waiting for some of our locks to return. Hopefully our front row resources are ok. Mawi makes a huge difference as a starter and Clarey continues to impress. With West back and Hoskins hopefully recovering to add to Riccioni and Mako we look well set.

There was one exceptionally dominant 7 man scrum towards the end there where the locks were Billy and Tom! Certainly plenty of weight and pushing.

It was very odd with Mawi yesterday, he’d already been down getting treatment on the shoulder he injured the week before when he collapsed in a heap at the second scrum and seemed in agony.
But he still stayed on and only went off with 20 to go.
Anyone know what he’s actually done?

Stonham’s performance at lock makes me wonder if that might be a long term position for him. He looked physically big enough to play there regularly. Unlikely, perhaps, but with the competition in the back row, having a heftier, kruis-physiqued lock could be beneficial.

MB he's surely too small unless he's had a massive growth spurt? We already have quite a number of our backrowers who are just over 6ft I think you need some height to balance that. Michelow from the Academy is a bit bigger so maybe he's a future option? As is, ofc, the very good Pearce-Paul.
Also whist we have a bit of a shortage right now, normally it's a position where we are admirably stocked.
I'm also interested to see if Boon will continue to fill out or not. No view either way but looking at someone like Moon at Saints (similar height) whom was a bit of a beanpole and is now a real unit and a powerful scrummager.

OM - I wonder if anyone can verify this, but he looked similar height to Tiz, I'd put him in the range of 6'4, 6'5. Certainly taller than 6'. I agree with the overall point that he looks like he's filled out and has some heft now.

I've never met Tizard but 6'5'' is Michael Rhoades type height and Stonham isn't that height or at least wasn't last season.

Watching the line-ups at the start of the game to try and work out how tall he is. Standing next to Tompkins and looks 2-3 inches taller maybe? but that is obviously a fairly inexact science!
