Premiership Teams 2018 Squads

Evening game at the Rec
By WhichTyler
July 4 2018

This is my interpretation of the pecking order and squad balance for each team in pictorial form and inevitably will be full of errors as I relied on wiki, and my knowledge of other teams squad.

I generally won't know whether Prop XXX is tight or loose head; etc; or picking between 3rd and 4th choice, so I'm open to any corrections and hopefully it'll get a bit more accurate over time. Please feel free to suggest any amendments.

Brilliant work

just a small thing for us Aled Brew usually plays left wing and Joe Cokanasiga usually right for Irish.

yeah, but Roko's our first choice right wing, whilst we have a vacancy at left wing, which Coka had been signed to cover.
I believe that Brew, Vuna and Wilson all prefer left wing, but that just looks unbalanced.
Now it may well be that Brew does end up as a first choice stated on the wing, in which case it's be left; early season I would expect that, with Coka on the bench; but I expect Coka to have taken the starting shirt by Christmas.
LL debate is good, however.

I have noticed a mistake for Wuss though - I added their new prop since drawing it all up, changed their number of forwards, but not their total number of players

Not really worth it TBH. It'll be far from the only mistake.

I may update things closer to the start of the season though.

Interesting read - thanks for compiling.

My goodness Glos have assembled some squad. Saints look a lot stronger (on paper) this year too. Going to be a very competitive league, reckon you could see as many as 4 teams involved in relegation scrap...hopefully we're not one of them!

From a bris perspective; Latta, Pincus, Haining, Malton, Thomas and Stirzaker all EQP too. No senior caps and residency over 3 years.

Firstly, great effort WT. It is a valuable resource. re Sarrries:

Lamositele is mainly TH (3rd) these days though he can play LH.
Thompson-Stringer and Adams Hale are LH
Walker (disappeared in second post) is now Senior Squad and 4th TH
Koch is 1st choice TH (impo)
It is Kpoku not Kopku, despite what our site writes
A fit Taylor is first choice OC, Brad our only real 12!
In the back row, Clark now 1st OS (imo). Earl, Reffell and Christie are also OS (imo despite our site), Conlon BS. Wray is 2nd choice BS (and also 2nd 8), Vailanu 3rd (2nd as Wray is BS) choice 8
Gallagher ahead of Crossdale at FB (who is more a wing despite what our site states)
SS is 41 43! sorry!, Academy (intake not yet announced - hopefully to include a second Kpoku) currently 10

Whilst here I'd like to add that I very much enjoy visiting and reading your threads (WT's posts in particular). Despite a couple of obvious er "issues" it has a good record of friendly discussion, with many prepared to open both eyes and praise/defend non-Bath players in healthy debate. Keep it up - and please don't allow poor man's "banter" re Bristol to sour your excellent site.

All the best for the season.

Thank you - I will put the corrections into my info, and try to remember to update it all again just ahead of the new season.

Some of those are human error (eg. I know full well that it's Kpoku; I just cocked up and didn't notice) and some is just understandable ignorance for other teams (in which case I'l either make positional estimates based on player stat.s; or looking for balance; or just guess)
Who do I have that shouldn't be there?
You're adding Walker(THP) and Gallagher(FB} to my list of seniors; but only adding one to the squad size

ETA: Actually, these edits coming in from guests is really useful - I'll see if I can post up on t'other sites and get more feedback.

Keep the edits coming guys!

43 WT - sorry!

Michael Rhodes is now EQ - Jones contacted him last year and there was a strong rumour that he was being lined up for the next AIs had he not been injured for so long. Mr Shields (now injured?) may have something to say about that!

In your post on our site you've mixed up a few Senior/Academy - Walker, Conlon, Morris, Griffiths, Bird-Tulloch and Crossdale I think. EQP% may need correcting (do/should they relate to the SS alone?).

Thank you - some of those were formatting errors from putting in your previous changes - bugger!
I'm only counting the seniors for the EQP - but tracking it for the academies
I think I've got it right in my file now. Though I'm still getting 24 forwards and 18 backs (seniors) ...

yup - just spotted him going through it myself - I'll chuck him on the left wing to balance the back 3 out.
I'll be honest - never heard of him before today; but then, that's the case for a good half dozen from each club

Fantastic work!

In our camp I'd personally say Ewels above Charteris (hence loan rumours), Obano above Paz...sadly hypothetical for next season..., and Fotuali'I above Cook. Based on last year's selections.

Doesn't affect what you're demonstrating but worth a debate smiling smiley

Absolutely worth a debate, part of what I'd like to stimulate.

Ewels vs Charteris for me is a close call, at opposite ends of their careers; Luke is on the downhill slope, and Charlie on the uphill. On his day, Luke was still the superior player last season; but "on his day" is likely to be ever less frequent (though he's still a good line-out and maul operator even on a bad day) - and we haven't really seen the best of him at Bath; so you're probably right.
FTR I have pretty severe doubts that we were actually looking to farm him out on loan for this season - that would have taken us down to 4, possibly 3 locks; and he always looked an odd one out in the list of names alongside Allinson, GMercer, JWilson where we have much more cover, and those players are much further away from meaningful gametime.

I absolutely agree with Obano over Paz; and would have him seriously challenging Catt were both fit and in form at the same time. However, his injury pushes him to the back of the queue for the coming season.

On Fotuali'i - based on 2017 - absolutely ahead of Cook; based on 2018 so far; I'd have Cook ahead. It depends on whether Kahn was overplayed and knackered; or if his legs and brain have simply gone. If we can get the Kahn of 2016 back, he'll be first choice ahead of Chudley.

Great piece of work. Two queries that stand out for me. Woodburn not to start for Exeter? Ashton not to start for Sale?

From a Tigers point of view i'd love to see Holmes ahead of Thompstone but i don't see any evidence that the coaches see it that way.

Re: Premiership Teams 2018 Squads

There will always be disagreements about this sort of thing - and that discussion is more than welcome.
For both Woodburn and Ashton, it's a matter of who they'd replace.
Ashton will need to prove to Diamond that he's better than 2 other younger England contenders... or James O'Connor. He may well do it, but he won't just walk into the XV. Woodburn will have to prove that he's better than 2 wingers with 20+ caps each, again, he may well do it,but if so, it'd say more about Cuthbert than it does Woodburn IMO.

As for the Tigers flankers... I wouldn't be able to comment intelligently, so am led by Leicester fans - I'm perfectly happy to make any changes with an apparent consensus of fans.

My eyes lit up when I saw 'worth a debate'... until I read on and agree with 99% of what you've said... very disappointing!

I realistically don't share your optimism over Charteris given his probable salary vs season impact but at the very least he serves as a reminder never to return to the MF era of squad building philosophy.

How do Wasps have such a big squad and depth given the amount of 'star' players they have?... Either their negotiator or their accountant are working miracles!

Also... that Sale squad has a perfectly decent starting VX but a real lack of depth! Unless I'm missing something? Looks like they'd collapse given our injury crisis.

Speculation?

Toomua out is at the end of the season. TPN would just be missing the start of the season due to QN; he's got the required number of caps to play for Aus whilst based overseas.

Right - this is what I've got now; witht he season about to kick-off.
We're unlikey to get any announcements until Tuesday, whilst the first match is Friday; and I'm going to be busy all week, so I thought I'd run the updates now. There probably are still 1-2 signings to come, but as of now, they'll pretty much be mid-season signings (eg Newcastle will want to replace Wilson; Guy Mercer is still looking for a home; injuries are inevitable)

Dunno if someone wants to update the OP.
