The IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy kicks off this week in Chile. Eight nations will take part in this inaugural competition with each nation having a 26 man squad.
Many of the players named in the squads have played for their countries at U19 level over the last two years. The restructuring of age grade rugby to combine both the Under 19 and Under 21 levels into two new tournaments – IRB Junior World Championship and IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy – at Under 20 level has given these players another chance to taste success.
Chile who host the competition are very versatile and will no doubt have home crowd support. Romania and Nambia are both physical and strong. Korea have confirmed they will be looking at their defence to aid them. The Cook Islands are still searching for their first victory in an International Rugby Board age grade tournament. Jamaica have already created history simply by qualifying for the inaugural IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy, and emerging nation for rugby they have been taught the entire laws of the game going through not just physical fitness and endurance but the whole works.
As for Georgia the number of people wanting to play the sport has increased greatly on the back of the World Cup and Georgia’s climb to the top of the European Nations Cup standings with three wins in 2008.
Romania and Georgia scrum down against each in their Division B match at the IRB Under 19 World Championship 2007.

Georgia’s power and big tournament experience proved too much for brave Jamaica as they began their IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy campaign with a 90-3 victory at the Estadio San Carlos in Santiago, Chile.
Centre Rati Nutsubidze scored 19 of Georgia’s points, including seven conversions and one try.
Jamaica showed their naivety at this level, but with athletes of such obvious talent as lock Andre McFarlane and three more games in this tournament, they can only benefit from this experience.

Uruguay have been crowned the inaugural IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy champions after coming from behind to beat host nation Chile 20-8 in the final at the Stade Français Club in Santiago on Sunday.
The early exchanges between the two teams, dominated by ferocious tackling and peppered with unforced errors, reflected the anxiety and emotion of the 30 players.
Overall it was a clash of the equals – two teams of similar size, similar desire to win, know-how and levels of skill who knew each other well, having met frequently at various age groups in a South American or international context.
