COVENTRY remain four points away from National League One safety with two games to go after slipping to a 27-26 home defeat against Redruth on Saturday.A late drop goal from fly-half Aaron Penberthy denied Cov the win they needed from a game where they led twice but paid the price for unforced errors.
And they will travel to second-from-bottom Otley this Saturday without fly-half Elliott Read who, after scoring Cov’s 100th try of the season to give them a 21-12 half-time lead, dislocated his shoulder midway through the second half.
“It’s still in our own hands,” said forwards coach Dave Addleton, “and we have just got to go to Otley, play to a basic game plan without errors and work hard to make sure we get it right this time.
“There were too many unforced errors today – Redruth were fighting for their lives and capitalised on it.
“Having got in front at half-time we told the boys they had to keep working hard and not take a backward step but they went to sleep and it just didn’t happen.
“There were some good individual performances but it needs to be a collective thing and everybody needs to bring their top game to it next week.
“If we cut out the mistakes in our own 22 and play to the plan, we will be OK.”
Flanker Brett Daynes and back Ben Russell have both signed new contracts to remain at Cov next season.
* Warwickshire begin their build-up to the County Championship, where they will play in the Bill Beaumont Cup top tier of the competition, with a game against Coventry Nighthawks at the Butts Park Arena on Wednesday night (7.30pm).
They play Lancashire at Sedgley Park on May 7, Cheshire at Butts Park a week later and Yorkshire at Hull on May 21.
