WHAT a disaster the weekend was for everyone involved – from a team perspective an unthinkable loss, from a fans’ perspective a dull 8-3 scoreline strewed with errors and from a personal point of view, a dislocated ankle and most of Saturday in A and E.

I’m not going to dwell too much on the game as I didn’t see it. Rugby is a funny game and even though we had prepared brilliantly and were up for the game beforehand as normal, I couldn’t help but sense we were not quite at the races in the changing room five minutes before kick-off.

It’s hard to explain. Sometimes you can have an awesome week’s training, great vibe before the game and then play awful and vice versa.

I have been asked a million times why games like Saturday happen and, frankly, if I knew that I should be coaching England as it happens all the way through the levels week in week out and for me it has to go down to mental application on the day.

When we are met with the big teams I think it injects fear into us. Fear that if we are not there we will get a real beating and so we rise to the challenge and meet it head on. This was the case against Ealing two weeks ago.

Wharfedale, although they have been going well, are still low down in the table and with the game being played at the BPA I think there was a subconscious sense that it was going to be an easy afternoon. This was quickly proven not to be the case and once you are on the back foot in rugby it’s not an easy task to turn things around. Momentum, as proven so often, is king!

I think this is a young man who has really nailed it, with regard to team psychology.The only thing I would add is that young teams turn up with a plan, but are unable to adjust when faced with the opposition's plan. It will no doubt come with experience, but will we have the same team next season, or will the promising players have moved on, and it's back to square one.

Yep, I'm with you Roger, it's fairly honest. When I played (at a much lower standard than Luke) one week you could play your socks off, feel fit and strong, full of energy. The next week, on exactly the same training, diet and preparation (3 laps, lots of beer and a pre match warm up fag ho ho) you could have a stinker for seemingly no good reason.

I guess it's just life although as a paying customer these days I obviously hope there aren't too many more like W'dale!
