Coventry coach Phil Maynard says sorry for poor performance.

RUGBY director Phil Maynard apologised to Coventry’s travelling supporters after a crushing 44-0 defeat at Cinderford in their final game of the season.

“It wasn’t good enough and I genuinely felt for all the people who had come down and paid their money to watch a performance like this,” said Maynard.

“Looking at it there were players out there who were giving it everything and could not be faulted for their effort but it wasn’t happening throughout the team.

“It’s been a long and often difficult season, we have been crippled by injuries, and this was probably just one game too far – but it can’t explain this type of performance.”

Cov, who lost second row Benji Dechartres with an elbow injury after half an hour, were 32-0 down at half-time after playing into the strong wind and rarely threatened a recovery after the break.

“It’s done and we have to draw a line under it and move quickly on,” said Maynard. “We have some hard work to do now on recruitment to get things in place to start afresh in September.”

Players confirmed as leaving the Butts Park Arena include flanker Alex Nash and second row Andy Weaver, who are moving, respectively, to Sweden and Australia.

Well, at least there has been some recognition of a pretty poor, even dire, display. Let's hope that the very much wider implications of the whole season, rather than just the one game, are understood, acknowledged and acted upon.
As for Nashie, if there are any clubs in Sweden who will offer him an opportunity, I would suggest it will be their gain.
