Up and coming fixtures...
The search for the first win since August 2017 continues and here are the up and coming fixtures for the West Wales Raiders over the next month. Two home games against Workington and Hunslet, with three tough away matches at Doncaster (again), London Skolars and Oldham at the endo of June. Good luck to all who pull on the jersey and welcome to new signings and those making returns.....
Another heavy defeat
Unsurprisingly West Wales Raiders exited the 1895 Cup at the first round stage going down 70-6 at Doncaster. The Raiders did actually take the lead before conceding a dozen tries in another heavy defeat. 2019 is shaping up to be another tough season as the club chases it first win since August 2017. The players have a chance to lick their wounds before returning to Doncaster on Sunday, May 26 for the league encounter between the two teams. This is followed by on Saturday, June 8 West Wales Raiders v Workington Town at Stebonheath and then on Saturday, June 15 away at London Skolars.
Oh dear, it does not get any easier.
In the Welsh derby North Wales Crusaders heaped more misery on West Wales Raiders with a thumping victory by 70 points to 8. (12 tries to 2). This was North Wales first win of the season and helped them bounce back after their Challenge Cup defeat by non league opposition the last time out. 2109 is shaping up to be another tough season for West Wales; and this was a match supporters and followers had hoped would herald the first positive result of the campaign, unfortunately it did not work out that way.
The search goes on
West Wales Raiders continue to search for their first win since the summer of 2017 and the visit of bottom club (albeit on points deducted) Keighley Cougars promises to be another tough test. The season started with high hopes and the pre season positivity was refreshing, however reality has dawned and WWR are once again being classed as "strugglers". The Welsh derby against North Wales Crusaders on Good Friday looks like being a must win game, as both teams have yet to break their ducks this season. Crusaders were also knocked out of the Challenge Cup by non league opponents.
Early kick off as the search continues...
After two consecutive defeats at Newcastle Thunder in the Challenge Cup and then in League 1, West Wales Raiders return to Stebonheath for a match against Whitehaven RLFC. The match takes place on Sunday 24th March with a kick off time of 11.00 am - however please check before travelling as there has been discussion regarding both the date and time for this fixture on the internet and as I write this piece conflicting informamation is still on different sites.
Newcastle upon Tyne and back & repeat once again...
The West Wales Raiders (WWR) are making the long trip to Newcastle upon Tyne on consecutive weekends, which will be a tough ask for all concerned. On 9th March (kick off 2.30pm) the two sices meet in a Challenge Cup match and then seven days later on 16th March they play a league 1 fixture with a 3.00pm kick off. The 2019 season has seen improved performances on the field for WWR but three consecutive wins means the club are still searching for that elusive win to break a long list of consecutive defeats. It is a tough and challenging sport and West Wales Raiders cannot expect any easy matches.
Up and coming...
ROUND THREE of League One. Saturday, March 2 Hunslet v West Wales Raiders 15:00 CHALLENGE CUP Saturday,March 9 Newcastle Thunder v West Wales Raiders 14.30 ROUND FOUR of League One Saturday, March 16 Newcastle Thunder v West Wales Raiders 15:00 Three tough fixtures but nobody claimed it would be easy.
London Skolars is a 2pm kick off on Saturday 23rd Feb
Please note the kick off for the first home match of the season is 2pm on Saturday 23rd February. The opponents are London Skolars who did not have a fixture in the opening weekend. West Wales Raiders will be looking to bounce straight back after the reverse at Coventry Bears. Please do note the changed kick off time - this should give the majority of fans time to get in front of a TV screen for the Rugby Union international and the players too!
The new season awaits...
After what seems like an awful long time since the appointment of Kim Williams towards the end of the disappointing 2018 season, the new era is about to commence in earnest. West Wales Raiders travel to Coventry Bears on 17th February for their opening fixture. The game kicks off at 3pm. This is followed six days later on Saturday 23rd February when London Skolars visit Stebonheath, the kick off is again set for 3pm.The third game in the opening treble is a tough trip to the Leeds area to play Hunslet on Sunday 3rd March.
