ALMOST READY FOR THE UPCOMMING SEASON

Ealing Fall to Edinburgh in Hard-Fought Pre-Season Test

Ealing Trailfinders came up short in a 27–14 friendly defeat to Edinburgh Rugby at Murrayfield on Saturday, but the game offered plenty of positives for the London side as they continue to prepare for the Championship season.

The visitors started with intent, pressing Edinburgh early and keeping the hosts on the back foot. Quick phases and strong running from the forwards saw Ealing test the Edinburgh defensive line, and a well-worked try from flanker Lewis Wells in the first quarter rewarded their early pressure.

Edinburgh, however, were clinical in turning opportunities into points. Ross McCann and a brace of second-half scores demonstrated the hosts’ ability to punish any defensive lapses, gradually stretching the lead despite Ealing’s resilience.

“We asked the lads to stick to our patterns and build confidence,” said Ealing head coach Ben Ward. “We saw moments of real quality in attack and defence, and that’s what we’ll focus on as we build for the season.”

Standout Performances

Fan Perspective

Despite the defeat, Ealing supporters were buoyed by flashes of attacking intent and disciplined periods in defence.

“It’s only pre-season, but you can see the patterns forming,” said season-ticket holder Claire Adams. “The team fought hard and didn’t give up, which is encouraging for the league campaign.”

The Way Forward

Defensive cohesion: Edinburgh’s late scores highlighted gaps; tightening line speed and communication will be key.

Set-piece consistency: Ealing’s scrums and lineouts need to function under pressure, especially against Championship rivals.

Squad rotation and fitness: The match showed promising depth, and maintaining intensity over 80 minutes will be a focus in training.

Ealing’s season opener is still weeks away, but this Murrayfield encounter offered a valuable yardstick. The team can take heart from the positives, learn from the moments that went wrong, and continue building confidence for the competitive fixtures ahead.

Final Score: Edinburgh Rugby 27 – Ealing Trailfinders 14
