Crowds greet Kevin Sinfield outside Kingston Park

The rugby league legend, who now coaches at Leicester Tigers, is running seven ultra marathons in seven days with the aim of raising £777,777 for motor neurone disease charities - seven being the shirt number of his Leeds Rhinos team-mate Rob Burrow.

Kingston Park Stadium was plotted into the route in recognition of Doddie Weir's links with Newcastle Falcons, whose entire playing squad interrupted their training day to give Sinfield and his team a guard of honour.

Supporters, well-wishers and local school children were also on hand, helping raise funds and awareness for the #Ultra7in7 challenge.

Addressing the crowd, Sinfield said: "I can't believe so many of you have come out in the pouring rain, but I'd have expected nothing less at a club with which Doddie Weir has been involved.

"I'd like to thank the head coach Dave Walder for getting the Newcastle Falcons squad here on a busy training day, and for everyone else who has come along to support the cause."
