With the 2003/4 season about to start an acrimonious thread develops on the messageboard. What is it about this medium that gets people so hot under the collar?

An Ed’s Diary – 9th September 2003

We’ve had a thread entitled ‘LISC AGM’ which didn’t half blow up. The initial exchange between longsuffering , MrsGoz and FR Ted seemed to have calmed down then lo and behold Pauleen came on to announce that she was resigning from the committee because of posts on the site. All hell broke lose, I’m glad I stayed out of it. Even then I’m sure I’ll get some of the blame by dint of co-editing the site.

What I struggle with at times such as this is that I know most of the people who are posting on the thread. I know that there was no malice intended in Kevins original posting nor indeed in almost all the replies. If this exchange of views had been held face to face or even on the telephone nobody would have thought anything about it. There is something about the medium that is the site that can at times like this get people hot under the collar.

Subtel goes to the London Irish press day ready to sms me with any information he picks up. He may as well not have bothered for as soon as they sit down and the presentation starts all the news appears on the official website. We are most impressed. The two main items of news are that we now do have a St. Patricks weekend game, against Bath and that we still don’t have a title sponsor for the shirts.

Finally the rugby is starting. I put the first match preview of the season, for our game against Leicester, up on the front page. The normal routine of speculating who will be on the team, arranging which pub to meet in, etc. is now well underway. At this stage I don’t have anyone to write a match report for this weekends game. I’ve mailed Dermot to ask him if he is going to it.

A poll I’ve run on the site asking where people live has come up with the following after 128 votes…..

Reading Area - 28%
Thames Valley - 19%
S.W. London - 9%
Greater London - 14%
Rest of UK - 26%
Overseas - 4%

It really is amazing how many supporters we have picked up from the Thames valley area since our move to the Madstad.

As the start of the season approaches the Saints site which has been quiet for most of the summer starts to take a lead over us again. It appears to be 10% ahead of us so far this month, echoing the tail end of last season. Unofficial Spurs, which I thought would dominate things, seems to have fallen off, I don’t know why.
