Danny Care Out of World Cup
By RFU
August 17 2011
England and Harlequins scrum half Danny Care sustained an injury to his left big toe joint in last weekend’s fixture against Wales and, after scans and specialist opinions, will undergo surgery this week.
Recovery time is anticipated to be a minimum of six weeks and therefore Danny is ruled out of the initial 30 man Rugby World Cup squad to be announced on Monday 22nd August.
Speaking on the news, England Team Manager, Martin Johnson said: “We are all hugely disappointed for Danny who has worked extremely hard and has been an important part of the squad throughout our Rugby World Cup preparations. He featured in both warm-up fixtures and was on course for selection so this injury is really disappointing for him personally and for us as a squad. Nobody wants to see a player ruled out at this stage through injury and we all wish Danny a speedy recovery.
“In terms of our selection options we are fortunate to have depth at nine with Ben Youngs, now back into full training, Joe Simpson and Richard Wigglesworth. These guys have all been part of the Rugby World Cup camp and will be considered ahead of the final 30 man squad announced on Monday.”

On the plus side, don't think there is any chance he would have been bringing home a winners medal, England are not good enough.
And.........we might have a fit Danny playing for us throughout October!

Shouldn't that be Wales?
Anyway, really back luck for Danny. He must be absolutely gutted.

Even if Ben Youngs is match fit and at the top of his game again by the World Cup (and that's a big if) he still has games where he is pure awful and loses control ( Vs Ireland in Six nations for example) and that's when Danny Care steps in a grasps the game back..
Having said that, even if Ben Youngs is match fit I still think Danny deserved a place ahead of him anyway.
All I can say is atleast he's young and has a few more World Cups for him to go to in his time.
bad news for England, don't think any of the others have put there hands up for a starting place. Youngs can't be truly match fit, Wigglesworth looked hopeless last week. Oh dear

If his re-hab goes well i notice the England management only mentioned the initial squad, so who knows, he could yet make a late call-up if others are unfortunate too.
Whats your views on Simpson?
Good luck to him
At least he has experience playing behind a beaten pack, like Danny.

As to Simpson, fast, pacy, speedy, pass is OK, not great at controlling a pack, should have been given a run out at some stage before now.
I would be looking at Lee Dickson if I was MJ
Nunquam Dormio
I wouldn't write off Youngs yet. He may have had some dodgy games this season but he has shown that he is top quality when on form and behind a decent pack.

He's been playing well too. Probably the only guy in a white shirt on Saturday who could hold his head up at the end of the game. Gutted for him.
Bit unfair on the tight five, but yes it is a huge shame.
Joe Simpson is a good player - lacks some of the all round skills of the others I think but his pace is a genuine threat. Good luck to him if he goes.

Danny Care has admitted he is "absolutely devastated" after being ruled out of World Cup contention just five days before England boss Martin Johnson names his squad.
The Harlequins scrum-half was rated as a certainty to feature among Johnson's 30-man party that will head to New Zealand on August 29.
But 24-year-old Care will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a damaged joint in his left big toe suffered during last Saturday's defeat against World Cup warm-up opponents Wales at the Millennium Stadium. Care said on Twitter: "Absolutely devastated about my injury, but in the best hands for my op."
England's medical staff anticipate that Care, who has won 32 caps, will be sidelined for six weeks. With Johnson confident that last season's Six Nations number nine Ben Youngs will be fit and available after having a knee operation earlier this summer, it leaves Saracens' Richard Wigglesworth in pole position to join Youngs at the World Cup.
Johnson must then decide whether to name a third scrum-half - Wasps' Joe Simpson - or maximise the versatility of a player like full-back Ben Foden, who has played Premiership rugby in the number nine position.
He added: "Wish the lads all the best to hopefully win the World Cup!! Thank you so much to everyone for your kind messages, helping me getting through this tough time. Supposedly everything happens for a reason?"
And Wigglesworth was one of the first to offer his condolences to Care, tweeting: "Gutted for Danny. Spoke to him yesterday. Worst timing possible. Big loss to the squad as a player and a person."
Care is the first player to be sidelined from Johnson's squad selection plans for a tournament that England kick off against Argentina in Dunedin on September 10. Johnson said: "We are all hugely disappointed for Danny, who has worked extremely hard and has been an important part of the squad throughout our Rugby World Cup preparations.
"He featured in both warm-up fixtures (against Wales) and was on course for selection, so this injury is really disappointing for him personally and for us as a squad. Nobody wants to see a player ruled out at this stage through injury, and we all wish Danny a speedy recovery.

"Johno on DC: "We are all hugely disappointed for Danny who has worked extremely hard and has been an important part of the squad.""
Am gutted for him as the RWC is the biggest stage for any Rugby player. Here's hoping that he gets even better as a Scrummy in time to shine here in 4 Years.

He is my 9 yr old lad's hero, even more so after he briefly met Danny a couple of weeks ago, I dont dare tell him the news yet......
I really dislike the use of the word gutted in this context but still each to his own.
It's a difficult choice for Johnno - Youngs, in uncertain form and just back from injury; Wigglesworth, steady but not spectacular; Simpson, lots of potential but untried. The selection for Ireland will be quite telling.
ned the England No 9 shirt. Hope he recovers quickly and gets back at his best for Quins and England asap to show the world his is a true quality player as all Quins fans already know.
Good luck Danny on your rehab

Care is very good at not bringing his club form to an England shirt!
Elsewhere, I hope there are still some Quins fans left after this sudden attack of mass-evisceration and disembowlment...

...or is it that England are very good at adopting a gameplan that doesn't make the best use of Danny?
Danny's not a conventional "boss the pack and pass" scrum half - he cops plenty of criticism for his pass, but his ability to break and his kicking offset that - as long as he's allowed to do it.
The England of 2009/10 seemed to have ordered him to play conventionally, and it didn't suit him. Since the AIs, England have played a more expansive game that's given him much more freedom to run, and he has looked all the better for it. In fact, I'd say that given the lack of creativity in the centres, DC is important to the overall England game because he keeps the opposition guessing.
I was in fact quoting from a post in another thread by nicksb whom seemed to think that DC's form didn't transfer well to the England setup.
