MoTM v Gloucester at the Gardens
By Tim Empson
July 8 2009
As we move into the final stages of the season our old friends from Gloucester arrived at the Gardens. The previous we had watched them labour to a win over Ospreys at the Ricoh. Was this game to be turgid like that or another battle of the Gardens with Saints having to give their all in defence over the larger Gloucester forwards?
Question: Who was your MoTM as Saints beat Glaws in a thriller at the Gardens?
In the end the answer was neither. Instead we had a game played at electric pace, with commitment on both sides and only one yellow card from Mr Small. It was wonderful fare for the full house of 13,426 and one of those games that are almost worth the season ticket on their own. I am sure that the disappointed tractor boys would not have felt the same way on their journey home but despite the final score line it was close until a late surge from the Saints put the game beyond doubt and in the process secured a try scoring bonus point.
In the first half tries by Diggin and Hartley were cancelled out by 3 tries from Gloucester with only the boot of Myler from the indiscretions of the visitors allowing Saints to go in at half time 23 - 19 up.
In the second half Barkley and Myler traded penalties leaving the score at 26 - 22 up until the 78th minute when Captain Bruce Bruce raced over to score which substitute Everitt converted. Saints could have sat on the lead and tried to run down the clock but they seemed to have the bit within their teeth and even though the clock was dead the put together a final attack which saw Captain Bruce Bruce make a break on the half way - passing out to (note that passing!) Digger who through a series of side steps managed to avoid Morgan - just to get over the line to score the bonus point try. Barry calmly stepped up and slotted the extra points to give the final score of 40 - 22. Can we have more of these games please!
So who caught the eye?
As stated above this was a game and a half and that is reflected in the voting as we had 142 votes this week. My thanks to you all!
There were not however many names that got over the 10% mark for discussion - although every player did get at least one vote. No, this week there was a stand out player who got almost 58% of the votes. The was our super Captain Bruce Bruce Reihana. Congratulations Bruce. Two wins in 3 weeks - could Bruce be launching a last ditch effort to win the overall season poll? Time will tell.
