Q1 Hawaii?

Q3 Has to be Chicago or Detroit, i'd go for the latter as its on the shores of the more northerly lake, twisted logic wins?

Q6 - I know the Dutch had a large holding in what is now upstate New York. I'm also guessing Spain, France, England, possibly Portugal?

Q2 - you have to be 35 or older

On an area of reluctant specialization: Q3 is most obviously Detroit, but you could be flying from Seattle or Juneau or so on to Toronto. All of Boston, Buffalo, Providence, and New York are north of that hideous Windsor border crossing, too.

However, let's face it - the Golden Horseshoe is even more similar to the U.S. than Wales is to England, and to a foreigner, they're identical...

Q.10: A very tenuous connection, involving Robert Redford.

The Latter Day Saints HQ is in Salt Lake City, which hosts Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival.

The festival is named after his role in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid - part of which was set in Bolivia, and which co-starred Paul Newman.

Redford & Newman also made The Sting - which featured Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" in the soundtrack.

No doubt the real answer is a lot simpler.

Q2 theres also a residency rule as well - you have to have been resident in the US for 15 years.

I'm pretty sure that Kentucky is one of them, and I would guess at the other being West Virginia (which split from Virginia during the conflict and joined the Union).

q4 - no not soldiers field - the correct answer is apparently a rumour that was later denied by the general in question.

q7 - West virginia did ,as you say Sarge , split from Virginia - but did not become a state for some time.

Kentucky was merely split on sympathies like Missouri -not officially a slave owning state it changed hands and sympathies several times as the war ebbed and flowed.

Maryland did not join the confederacy but was not a slave owning state its people fought on both sides.

the answer is quite small and quite surprising.


Finally as you are all so clever this week some supplementaries in the next post.

Red Saint - you got me thinking again about the colonisers of America and found that in fact the Swedes did have a small settlement in what is now Delaware. It was taken over by the Dutch some time in the 17th Century.

The only Danish ( as opposed to Viking ) presence in the Americas was what were the Danish Virgin Islands -sold to the USA after world war 2 - i think.

Pete, in your responses to Q4 suggestions you sort of imply (in my eyes) that those who suggest US answers are on the right lines. So, something to do with baseball?

ps. What happened to Q8?

You're right Phil, had to track it down but Abner Doubleday didn't invent baseball, its an urban myth, he was however a Civil war general.

Its a bit like the US version of Bob Holness playing sax on Baker Street.

And i was kinda right, it was said Abner 'tweaked the English game of cricket' its all baloney though, about as believable as the Webb-Ellis story.

Phil - i cant count so no Q8 - this is why i dont do mathematical questions.

Chris G - twas Abner Doubleday a union general who commanded a divison at Gettysburg - the rumour or myth that he invented the rules of baseball persisted for some time but the man himself repudiated the idea in his later life.

Jon - nothing to do with self regarding titles like commonwealth - but you are on the right lines in terms of size - although it wasnt Rhode Island who provided a famous artillery battery for the northern cause.

Is this Texas? At various times it would seem to have been ruled by France, Spain, Mexico, Republic of Texas and the USA.

the State is texas - flags are Spain , Mexico , the Confederacy , USA and the bonnie blue flag - lone star or the texans own flag when briefly independent.

Ah I see Jon, didn't get it from QI though, it was on the baseball (again) commentary last season where they were 'arguing' about Washington, it being in the District of Columbia and technically not in a state at all. Given that the Nationals have a franchise the talking point was why can't Puerto Rico (a US territory) have a team in the MLB given all the major players from PR who have played in the leagues including greats like Roberto Clemente, From there they then went on to arue to toss about the four commonwealths, the price of fish and what a good deal the French got on the Louisiana purchase.

And we think Test Match Special is obtuse at times...

The Answer is USA (is there a prize for guessing the connection?)

Texas has had six flags- spain, france, mexico, the republic of texas, the confederacy and the usa. They are on the state seal and the side of the capitol in austin - I learned all about it when I did a tour of the capitol (i did 2 semesters at uni in Texas). I think florida may have had 5 flags, spain, france, uk, usa and confederacy but i'm not sure.

staes with alot of flags - ther seemsto be dsome dispute here - but hat i like about this informal format is that we canb have a bit of debate about things.

Florida - Spain France USA ,Confederacy but again no evidence for British involvement.

If anyone can prove otherwise lets be havin yer. I am always willing to learn.

Well researched St M - but they were never an independent republic like texas so never had thier own flag.

But you are also right CLeggthorpe Texas had/ had six flags - i never knew about the French - must have been some strange settlement made at about the time of Louisiana.

and apparently Florida had been under had 5 including the british.

Well thats teached me.

Next round will be somewhat scientific in a very general sense of course.
