Also an interesting side note on Lapis lazuli - some artists would dilute the mixed pigment with other substances - keeping some of the precious stuff back for themselves.
A as result some paintings - alter pieces in particular are now after several hubndred years beginning to show the Virgin ( traditionallypainted in a blue gown/ robe ) in spotty grey /green
( well once had a Max Boyce LP and some Irish stuff that I picked up in a Pan Celtic music store in Lorient Brittany that was probably close to being illegal in the UK)
and I once saw Max Boyce before he was infamous at the actually infamous Double Diamond Club in Caerphilly - where he struggled to get the attention of an audience that was hell bent on getting totally wasted.
