Joe Shaw, the 22 year old full back has left the saints to join Newcastle Falcons. Joe's brave running and interesting hair will mean he is badly missed by the gardens faithfull and Joe's adoring lady fans. Saints fans are also concerned that his loss severely weakens the squad.
Joe Shaw arrived at the gardens in 2000 following the successful European cup winning season with a growing reputation.
Shaw made 21 appearances to the club, scoring four tries. He will be missed for his hair if nothing else! His opportunities at fullback were limited due to injury and former England and British Lion International Nick Beal.
Fullbacks at Franklins Gardens seemed jinxed in 2000. Beal was already injured due to breaking his leg at Vicarage Road, Shaw himself was injured early in the season after making his debut against Falcons, then Ian Vass and Craig Moir playing out of position both suffered long term injuries.
When the Saints fans did get a glimpse of Smoking Joe Sideshow Bob Shaw (as he is known here at COYSDC,) they were very impressed with his pace and brave running. Safe under a high ball, Joe was always willing to take the counter attack option. The more cynical Saints fan, would say this was to cover a weakness when kicking from the hand.
Shaw's departure leaves Saints very thin at fullback. Nick Beal is now the only recognised 15 in the first team squad although Oriol Ripol can apparently cover this position.
This is probably part of Wayne Smith's masterplan but may also be an exercise in economics as Joe was rumoured to be among the clubs higher earners.
Good luck Joe Shaw, we will all miss you!
