Squad for next year

Key player.
By WW
May 26 2017

Following our defeat in the Championship play-off final we now know that a number of players will be leaving the club this summer. However the club announced on May 26th that six players had re-signed for next season making our signed squad 21 players....

We have lost some very talented and influential players. Many of them will go on to have good careers in the Premiership and we wish them well. However J-Lo has to go on to next season and do what we failed to do this season, get promotion!

The squad, so far, is much stronger than I had anticipated a week or so ago. Today 6 players announced that they had signed on for next season. Key amongst them are Chris Elder, Tom Casson and Richard Beck.

Already we might have:

Fullbacks: Chris Elder, Stevie McColl

Wings: George Watkins

Centres: Tom Casson, Pete Lucock, Andy Forsyth, Max Wright,

10's  , Callum Irvine

Scrum halves: Alex Davies, Max Green, ,

Props: James Thraves, Lee Imiolek, Charlie  Beech,Marc Thomas, Mike Cusack. Charlie Capps

Hookers: Mike Mayhew, Ross Graham, , Jordan Poole, Joe Buckle

Locks: Ben West, Mike Myerscough, Jack Whetton, Matt Smith, Dan Sanderson

Backrow: Richard Beck, Josh Bainbridge, Brandon Staples, Richard Mayhew, Ollie Stedman Lewis Wilson.

There are still a number of players who have not yet been announced as staying or leaving. Primary amongst them is Matt Smith who, it appears, has now re-signed. However the focus will be, as usual, on the fly half spot. We have two academy players, Sam Allen and Ben Smith, but the club shows Alex Davies as a "Universal back" which might indicate that he will play other positions than 9. Max Green is also down as a 10 and I can remember seeing him play 10 for the Academy some years ago. Fly halves do not come cheap so it will be interesting to see if we have the "bunce" to tempt a decent 10 to LS6.

Whatever happens we have retained some experienced pros. Next year's pack will look very familiar with a backrow of Beck, Stedman and Mayhew. Myersough, West or Whetton in the boilerhouse with a front row containing Beech , Mayhew and Imiolek will be a formidable pack.

There are still things to be sorted  at 10 but  we have retained our main centres plus we will have Elder and McColl in the back 3 .

This scenario will change as signings and departures are announced but I believe that we already have the makings of a competitive squad for next season

It is only a rumour that we have signed the two Jersey lads - we might not get either of them.

Worth noting Guy Borrowdale, Dan Preston-Routledge and Sam Allan were all released at the end of the season. Centre Tom Bullough from the Academy has been retained so midfield and back 3 are solid. Lewis Wilson is also retained from the Academy in the back row. Some building work still to be done though.

I agree North.

I think Davies was one of the better players we imported but sadly, I don't see that many accolades on this board about him, compared with say with the Mayhew's whom I also rate.

IMV Leave Davies at 9, he really spark's the backs into action and 'bosses' the forwards to do the necessary.

Callum was very good a couple of years ago before losing his way somewhat. A change did him good and hopefully, if he has got his head right, then he could be a good signing. Minikin would not be a bad signing either, he knows how to dissect the uprights!

We have 26 players as it stands - clearly not enough for a creditable challenge In the league. Ok the rumours suggest more players coming in, but it is now well into pre-season. Other Clubs have announced their open days to meet the new squad and looking good. So where does this leave us - if some of the players, as said in the post above, have stayed with us because no one else wanted them then I am ok with that because some excellent talent. Please Yorkshire Carnegie or whatever we are going to be called - what is going on.

Re: Squad for next year

I have been thinking about the squad, and the position the team are in at present. J-Lo has said that there will hopefully be opportunities to recruit players later in the season, but not now. Possibly he means loanees, but there is another possible interpretation.
Optimistically I hope that our finances will improve later in the season: we appear to have lost the Carnegie money but have continued to give them our naming rights. I hope that this is in anticipation of some sponsorship arriving in due course. My logic is that I can't help noticing that the "Carnegie" brand is not that strong any more and that the University has rebranded a couple of times in recent years. Couple that with the "Carnegie" stadium being hacked to pieces and perhaps the sponsorship/naming rights are going to be re-launched with lots of cash coming our way soon.

You may say that I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one.....

Re: Squad for next year
Posted by: Wildwillie (IP Logged)

Nope we will struggle. We always have lots of injuries so will end up playing people out of position. According to the official site we only have 10 backs. None of them are classed as scrum halves and Davies is called a "universal back"

There is no sign of an influx of dual reg players so I am thinking that we are starting the season with 31 players.

Dream on Almo. You must have missed the announcement that both the cricket and rugby stadia are to be sponsored by a Bingley based publishing company called Emerald. We will therefore have the Emerald Headingley rugby stadium. The 10M sponsorship money will go towards paying off the loan for the stadium redevelopment. So no more money available there. The new naming rights commence on 1 November this year - hence we still have Carnegie until then.

With regard to the Carnegie "brand", not many people outside (or even in) Leeds know that Carnegie is the sports faculty of the university based at Beckett Park, a name that dates back as far as I can remember when it was Carnegie College of Physical Education. The Carnegie name has survived all the different incarnations of the former Poly.

All the business with Emerald has nothing to do with our finances as any moneys received will be for the benefit of Yorkshire CCC or Leeds CF&AC Ltd. Whilst we will no doubt be expected to refer to Emerald Headingley in any published material we can call ourselves what we like.

I'm expecting a season of many dual reg players, not sure that is the team I want to be supporting. Bringing other teams players in week in and week out isn't for me.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

Green wil play 9, Davis at 10 that is what jimmy said ! Will be a very attaking half backs with good pace, and a good attitude. Don't forget Green played 10 times for England 20's and won the World Cup, will be a good combination imho !

I hope that Irvine gets a chance from the bench. He could be a real find.

Well here we go again for another season of ups and downs. Looking forward to it as usual . Maybe we will not grace the top of the table but if we could develop a team spirit like Donny of the last couple of seasons then we will have a entertaining journey.
