Just read about the dreadful illness effecting this 'little' man who was first choice loose head and so important to the Lions on two tours. Top class scrummager against much bigger opponents and real work horse of the team. Very well thought of member of Northampton's pack for 8 seasons as well. Very much an unsung hero who actively shunned the limelight.

I remember the South African press before he first test, harping on about how men like the huge Os Du Randt were going to crush the Lions front row of Smith, Wood and Wallace. Both Wallace and Smith were relatively small men compared to their prop opponents but ensured we had good clean ball and stood up very well to the behemoths opposite them.

Tom has a mountain to climb with the stage he is at with his cancer but if anyone can beat it he will. Very best of luck to you and your family Tom. The rugby world is thinking of you.

Awful news for Tom Smith and his family. Tom has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer.

Remember Tom on the 97' Lions tour and for the Saints as a quiet but destructive prop.

Terrible news. Doesn't sound good at all.
Us men really need to not man up! That's not meant as a criticism of Tom Smith but to get checked out when symptoms don't go away.
A legend of Northampton, Scotland & the Lions. Best wishes and praying for a miracle x

So sad, so young. An absolute rugby legend and thoughts with his family and friends for their loss, must be real tough but golly what a reminder [especially for men] to get early check ups

Devestating news for such a great man of rugby. Quiet in front of cameras and did all his talking on the pitch, always reminded me of our own great Scotsman David Sole.

My heart goes out to him and his family, one thing is for sure Tom will never stop fighting, all our best wishes.
