Joe, an uplifting comment, its all part of British culture with a heavy portion of English Worcestershire sauce, humour and upper lip stuff.
Personally I thrive on the bracing jog at 5am followed by a full English breakfast and a rendition of Swing Low sweet chariot. Miss my game of rugger with the chaps though. Pip Pip!

For me, proud is not quite the right word though I know what you mean

Appreciation is possibly closer the mark, for me anyway
