Championship Funding Cuts

There is an article on the BBC sports website about the impact the RFU funding and early end to the season due to the Coronavirus epidemic are having on Championship clubs.
It reports that both Nottingham(already confirmed) and London Scottish have decided to go part time.
Coventry are expected to make losses of 750,000 and are having to make cuts to their squad and backroom staff which their chairman says has set back their development as a professional club by 2 years.
The sad thing in this article is that there has been no confirmation from the RFU to date regarding the agreed funding for next season.
It is hoped that the season may start in September but that could be behind closed doors which would be a disaster for clubs finances which relies heavily on gate receipts.

Once again the RFU show they are not fit for purpose, just letting this disaster unfold and doing nothing. Behind closed doors rugby is OK for the Premiership as at least they get some TV and sponsorship money. Championship clubs get peanuts from the RFU and no TV money so rely on gate money and food, drinks etc sold on match days. Most of the businesses that sponsor clubs will be having their own problems staying afloat, so there won't be much "spare" money to put into sponsorship.

Perhaps Championship clubs could arrange their own pay for view match streaming to make some money if game are played behind closed doors.

I think there is a much more basic question than funding which is - Is rugby football an activity which can actually take place at all if there is going to be any extended requirement for some form of social distancing?
I can think of no other sport or activity which involves anything like as much concerted close physical contact between considerable numbers of adult people with large amounts of heavy breathing , sweat, snot and blood all flying about.

Just for clarity, Cov have stated that they have lost approximately 750k of expected income (tickets, hospitality, hosting an international match, Cov United FC, Cov Ladies FC, Coventry Bears RL matches, conferencing etc etc.
They've not published a loss/profit statement as yet.
Quite different, and potentially quite scary as a result
As you were winking smiley

Well said OPS, you are completely correct, and Dicky said as much in his recent interview, until there is an effective vaccine rugby will be impossible. Look at the fuss the wendy-ball players are making, and they have nothing like the same level of contact.
And the same goes for live games, with spectators. Forget all about it until next year.
This will get a hell of a lot worse, before it gets better, and there will be casualties, especially at the lower levels.
I would love to be proved wrong of course...

The problem is that there may never be a vaccine. There may be effective treatments though, as with HIV. When infections rates fall to a low level it will be a case of weighing up the risks against the benefits of returning to "normal" life.

Agree with you there stalwart, already signs the virus may well just sort of peter out to such small concentration levels inside people its hard to test a vaccine. The teams will be back in July/August for pre-season no doubt, thw first few weeks is standard fitness stuff anyway so not real rugby skills. Without crowds at games for a prolonged period going into next year the league as we know ot will be no more. We're walking a tight rope and dicky only has so much, and we're in a better position than most.
