Report on BBC Sport that the RFU will no longer fund the team. Ex Pirate Phil Burgess said the players will not be offered a contract and told they should go and find another job.

Another self destruct button pressed by the RFU. The way things are going they will fold altogether in the not too distant future. With all due respect to the ladies game surely the 7s is a much better product.

7s has been increasingly struggling over the past fews years (crowd numbers etc). A shame to read this news but I think the 15 aside game needs to be prioritized.

There have been reports that a Team GB Sevens side could potentially be fielded in future World Sevens series events. Team GB Sevens Discussions Held

Are other countries doing the same on sevens?
So sorry for Phil Burgess. He has been outstanding for several seasons, and been captain of the team of course. Has scored some memorable tries, including outrunning the whole of the South African fliers in Japan.
As for 15 a side games, looks like the good old days are just fading away

Ultimately the RFU has to save a shed load of cash, huge numbers of job loses are also being announced. The RFU have clearly messed up after making a big profit on the 2015 World Cup - that much is unquestionable. Unfortunately though the fact is now they need to budget. If cutting money from Sevens is the wrong move, the money would have to be cut from 15 a side. Where within the 15 aside game would we rather the savings would come from?

One idea might be to SELL the Twickenham site and its carparks etc to a property developer for housing, retail or whatever.

Forget about all that sentimental old claptrap about 'Billy Williams Cabbage Patch', 'Obolensky's tries' etc and get real. There are two perfectly good stadiums for Internationals and Premiership Finals in Wembley and Old Trafford and it should be noted that both Wales and Ireland SHARE their stadiums with other sports and France, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Argentina and Italy don't have national rugby stadiums and cope perfectly well.

Twickenham stands totally empty - apart from about 12 days a year at most - and even the Varsity match as well as county finals (if they still have them!) could be better played somewhere else like Leicester or The Stoop with lots more atmosphere on the day.

Well said, Steve. That site must be worth a hell of a lot of money.

Steve your spot on. Twickenham is very poor for rail and road access. Walking thru residential areas to the Stadium.Overpriced hotels. The RFU headquarters could be then located outside London at a reduced overhead. Like the House of Lords get rid of most of the "Blazers" who do a poor job. Where would you locate the new HQ? Bath, Newcasle, Bristol ?

The Women's top flight has also been significantly cut in financial terms. Out of interest, why would you choose to put women's rugby in the firing line when it is one of the growing areas of the sport - notably in Cornwall where player numbers are rising, which is not something which can be said for men's rugby in Cornwall!

Surrey Pirate, nothing more than somewhere to save cash instead of picking the sevens which if you remember was the biggest watched sport at the Olympics, since then nothing has been done to promote it whereas the ladies game is having more than it's fair share of the limelight, why, because it's cheap to televise and it fits the PC narrative. Personally I have nothing at all against women playing rugby however I just see the axing of the 7s as an easy opt out for the RFU, to axe the ladies game would provoke all the snowflake PC brigade shouting and crying from the rooftops. Personally I like OPS and his solution.
