Lineouts

I started a similar post some 18 months ago but old nick tried to convince via stats and facts that it's not a problem. However whatever arguments there are the fact remains that at key moments in games we constantly miss our line outs which cost us possession, territory, points and ultimately games!. We have 3/4 hookers at the club and they all suffer from the same problem so I wonder what the problem is. I'm sure the coaching staff realise this but once again last night we coughed up ball at a key point!. It is such a key part of the game and until we put it right I fear we will continue to lose games that we should be winning??

I can remember Matt Price was annoyed at being blamed for lineout issues and that must have been at least 4 years ago. As he rightly pointed out, it's not just the hooker's fault when the lineout malfunctions.
Several hookers later and the lineout is still causing us problems, no statistics can hide that...

Agree. Not apportioning blame and the fact that all our hookers seem to suffer the same problem would suggest its the line out as a whole that is malfunctioning?

Interestingly, talking to a Bedford supporter last night, he was bemoaning how rubbish the Blues have been with line outs this season.
Although not brilliant I did think our Line out was better last night than it has been recently.

Lineout and breakdown is costing us dear. We take pressure off teams and put ourselves under pressure. Problems that were apparent in National One and still with us.

From listening to the commentary weren’t their last 2 Try’s off the back of Cov losing the ball off their own throw?
Im sure the only ‘decent’ lineouts I’ve seen this year at the BPA were by Bedford (I think) on both occasions as they’ve got the 12 foot lock (6”10) so they just lob him up every time.
It does seem a division wide issue, hopefully from a Cov point of view the pre Christmas lineout display v Nottingham will never be topped!

Line out is about getting clean ball, we may win the line out but the delivery to the backs is dire. Decision making is the biggest problem and getting timing correct.

Can't help wondering how a certain Mr South would have changed things. I trust RW and his recruitment and I think this was a blow to his plans?

I remember in his first season with Cov (it might have been at a Fans’ Forum) that RW stressed the point that you can’t always and necessarily blame the hooker for his throw when a line out goes wrong. It may be that the jumpers don’t jump according to the call. It may be that the jumpers don’t jump at the right time. It may be that the lifters don’t lift either at the right time or high enough. For someone who’s never been in a line out in his life, I’m very much aware that there is a lot of technicalities and options to be successfully negotiated. Which means that, equally, there’s a lot which can go wrong.
Having said that, it is undoubtedly worrying that there are too many instances when Cov don’t get the mechanics right.

In the pre-Christmas Nottingham match, the main problem appeared to be that our jumpers were inadequately lifted, not getting airborne, therefore vulnerable to opposition contesting the throw.
I agree that this area is very important, and it must affect the team's confidence and the nerves of all those most directly affected. More intensive coaching time spent working on the line-out could be time extremely well spent.
