Sorry to hear about your losses Kimbo but I know I won't be alone in welcoming you back to the site.

We're generally a patient bunch of supporters but this is always the best forum for hearing any snippets of news.

Kimbo
Sorry to hear about your loss. These have been strange and difficult times. Glad you have remained positive and thanks for your time and effort with the article.

You have endured a very difficult few months Kimbo - sorry to hear about the passing of your family members.
You are great to get this popular site back up and running - my thanks to you for doing so.
We now have a clear understanding of who has signed so far for the coming season and no doubt there will be additions as and when Roland is ready to announce them

Hopefully there will be several more Geoff.
We will all need to be extra patient though!

It's obvious from the above appreciative comments that this board has been very much missed over the last few weeks and that Kimbo's efforts to get it back up and running are welcomed.
Given that it provides a lifeline as a dynamic forum for messages, exchanges of views, the provision of updates, requests for help and assistance in whatever form, general banter between supporters, etc, etc, it's a puzzle as to why it was allowed to go down and, without Kimbo's intervention, it would probably still be down.
There seems too, to have been little transfer of anything from the Unofficial Coventry Rugby Twitter account, or any story posts, in the last several months, so it's not entirely surprising that it became moribund and we supporters had to witness its demise.
All of which would appear to beg the question as to whether it needs a moderator who has the time to be able to keep on top of it?

It was allowed to go down because the person who took over management of it did nothing to keep it updated. If left without news items the owners of the site will take it down until updated.

The reason that there have been no transfers of information from other sources is exactly the same. News items have to be copied across by the manager of the site.

More concerning is what has happened to Russ? Has he just lost interest, has he been away on holiday, or are there other reasons that he has made no updates to the site in the past few months? We don't need to be told specifics, but is there anyone who can confirm he is OK?

Good point.

If Russ has been unable or unwilling to update the site then that's obviously up to him but, being an old mucker of mine, I'd hope he's keeping ok in these strange times...

Being an old mucker, is there any chance of you checking he's OK?

Old is the key word Kimbo - school mates from 40 odd years ago - my only contact now is when we occasionally bump into each other...

Itís unfortunate that the site became neglected. It happened before (I think it was early this year?) and Kimbo became pretty pi**ed off with Sportnetworkís reaction.
If youíre out there Russ perhaps you could put our minds at ease?

Sorry gents, Iím alive and well, but itís been frantically busy at work since the Covid crisis broke out.

Iím not a first responder or anything as brave as that, these days I work in the rather less dramatic world of financial data/modelling. Suffice to say no one quite saw this coming, so Iíve been a bit busy sorting things out data-wise. Itís really not as exciting as it sounds. smiling smiley

Thank you for the kind thoughts though, itís nice to be missed!

Iíd noticed the site was down a few days ago, which probably shows how often Iíve been here recently. I was actually tempted to call Sports Networkís bluff by refusing to update it and telling them so - theyíve then got the choice to lose all advertising by dropping a ridiculously unfair update rule, or keep some interest in the site by letting the message board stay up regardless.

However Iíve not had the chance to do that either, and Kimbo beat me to it by adding content. I still think their argument is patently rubbish though, and Iím still of the opinion that we should move away from here rather than have them demand fresh news content every two weeks to satisfy an arbitrary requirement.

Anyway, regardless of all of that, I hope everyone is well. Iím going to miss a few of those players, especially big George Oram who never failed to put in a full shift and then some...

Cheers,

Russ.

Hi Russ, it good to know youíre alive and well.
Obviously the site has missed the almost day-to-day management which it needs in order to meet the demands of Sportsnetwork and itís perhaps a bit unfortunate that you hadnít noticed that it was down until ďa few days agoĒ whereas, in fact, it actually went down some considerable time before that.
Given that the demands on your time with work and family leave you with restricted opportunity to manage the site, is it worth considering whether Kimbo, in his retirement and his willingness to take the responsibility on board, may be in a better position to take over from you?
Youíll appreciate that I have no axe to grind here and do not wish to embroil myself in the responsibilities which come with the site management, but could it be, in the circumstances, to your advantage (and possible relief) to relinquish the role.
Itís my impression that supporters are not favourably inclined towards the idea of a move away from the site to an alternative, so could this be a further incentive for you to let someone else take the responsibility?

It's the inconsistency that hacks me off most.

I've mentioned it before, both on here and on the Sportnetwork internal 'Publishers' forum, but I'll say it again.

There's no way that SN are totally impartial in their shut-down policy. A good few months ago (when I was still running this site) I got the right hump when they shut us down after 14 days without an update. Fine, you may say; them's the rules.
And I agree.
It's no excuse that I was away in a field somewhere with no laptop and very little internet access. That's my problem. I accept that. I was one day late though.
What really boiled my pish, however, was that several other sites had not updated at all for many weeks - months even.
Where was their sanction? Fair? Demonstrably not.

Just out of curiosity, I had a quick survey of the SN rugby sites earlier this evening.
I noted that Plymouth's site had disappeared (they haven't updated since late July, so it's to be expected).
However, of the others, Both Bedford and PzN appear to be well past their two weeks (approx 2.5 months and 11 months respectively).
Even in the rarified Promised Land, there are sites past their update limit (Wasps, Sale, Quins, Cardiff, to various degrees).

Like I said; it's the inconsistency.

Your silence says it all. So clearly you donít feel you have made any impact. Is there anything that we as users/posters can do to give weight to your argument?

My silence says I've only just seen your question.
No response the second time
The first time, they responded by saying they would 'look at the policy'. That patently didn't happen.
Nothing changes there, and I see nothing that will make it change, frankly.
