James Scaysbrook, the new man at the helm
Plymouth Albion is excited to announce the new Head Coach, James Scaysbrook who will be in charge of the team till the end of the season, with a view to committing further.
Mr. Scaysbrook spent an impressive 10 years at Exeter Chiefs as a player, but his coaching career has taken him far beyond Devon. James spent three years coaching Kowloon in Hong Kong before getting a job at Toyota Shuttles who play in the top division in Japan. After his stint in Asia, he took a coaching role for the England Under 20s, helping to shape the future stars of English rugby.
After putting pen to paper, James kindly answered some questions about his new role.
How do you feel joining the team while they are enjoying such great form?
‘I think it’s brilliant, it shows what determination and resolve there is in the group. They have had a challenging couple of weeks, and they have come through with a couple of great performances, some great results, the away win to Richmond just shows what potential there is with this group. Credit to the players, they have reacted well to difficult circumstances’.
What are you looking for from the players?
‘Basically, I will emphasize the potential of the group and obviously just how much character they have shown the last few weeks, we will be looking to build on that foundation. Those things are the most important to generate with the group and if we build on that foundation, continue the good work they have done there, that’s what would put us in a good place’.
Is there anyone in the squad you have worked with before?
‘I have worked with Rusi Tuima who was involved with England Under 20’s last year. He’s an exciting young player to work with’.
What do you hope to achieve with the team?
‘To start with it is going to be about building on the things they (the squad) have shown us, stabilizing everything to make sure we are clear on how we are all going to work, on how the team is going to function, those are the initial goals’.
‘Just to make sure we are building on the hard work the players have already done and we are really clear about how we want to play and the roles that everyone has. That is the focus for the rest of the season. We are going to stay process-driven’.

I believe he's had a stint with us before as a defence coach when he was at the end of his playing career with the Chiefs. I could be wrong... Very positive that we could get someone on board at this time of the season.

Hope he is getting a good idea what needs to be worked on and more. I think he will be a good appoint in time hopefully he gets backing in the summer should he stay on to build a squad good enough to finally get closer to a return to the championship.

I wonder if promotion to the Championship is really that enviable, it seems to me that a twelve team league and a poor cup is not as good as our sixteen team league.
