Number 8

For anyone watching this morning two great looking number eights playing for Blues and Chiefs. I know finances will be a challenge at the moment but I hope Boyd is still on the look for a dynamic and powerful number 8 to give Harrison a bit of a break when needed.

Nice idea but can't see us splashing out big money on any player at present. The current financial crisis apart, Boydie seems less interested in signing specialist players than some on this forum are.

I think itís pretty clear that the young lad Uru is seen as the number 8 that will come through. Thereís been a bit of press coverage about his development. I think we are done with recruitment for now, canít see an 8 being signed.

Unless this South African chap has an eye on the 8 spot. From his 7s days, he ought to have the handling and pace for an 8.

I think that Tedge is right in saying big money signings are unlikely. The Clubs have seen sense in reducing the salary cap and adjustments to budgets will have to be made. The economic blow from the Covid crisis will not have helped either. Much as I would like to see another large ball carrying No. 8 being signed I canít see it happening.

I actually thought for a second that Reece Marshall was being converted to an 8 until I read the full post and realised it was just a Gazza reference because of his hair!

In the article where Teimana talks about wanting to see out his career with us and his clothing line he mentions that he wouldn't be keen on going back to 7 and sees himself as an 8 now. He just needs some back-up/competition/cover. It fits our mold to have a more mobile number 8 which he, Uru and the new SA chap would all be. As long as there is sufficient bulk overall it could work very well, especially if we are moving towards more summer rugby.

We do need a back-up plan, if only to give him rest occasionally. Am I right in thinking it is the only position we have where we do not have an obvious second choice?

Other than as mentioned above yes now that Mitch Eadie has moved on.

If Teimana was unavailable first game back I suspect it would be Wood or Ludlum starting at 8.

Unless Uru has developed. Plus I'd be amazed if Shaun plays at 8 given his size and history.

This thread is the latest of many on this forum about the same topic and there are clearly strongly held views in favour of a "specialist" no. 8. My, possibly incorrect perception is that Chris Boyd either does not share those views or is content that his squad contains sufficient quality to perform effectively in that position. I am not sure what those who expound the need for a specialist expect from a no.8 but some have said that TH, for example, does not provide all that. So, two questions: 1) is a "traditional" 8, however defined, still an essential part of modern rugby and 2) Can modern. multi-skilled, non-specialist rugby footballers be as effective in that position ?

My own view is that your first suggestion reduces our effectiveness in the back row by removing a "proper" flanker.

Your comment regarding Uru is one reason for my wish for a back-up plan.

I think the ability to pick up and/or control a ball at the base of a scrum is as specialized a function as many elements of the game - but as you opine, perhaps Boyd does not view it this way.

But for goodness sake, if we do not decide upon an alternative, we are in danger of flogging Tei like we did to Alex Waller in the bad old days before enlightenment!

He is also described as a back row so would appear to fit the Boyd role of multi-skilled back rowers who can play 6,7 or 8

The post on Twitter about Reece Marshall being our new number 8, because of the Gaza hair cut, was that a hint at positional change or a small jest?
