The Way of the Warrior: Worcester v Bath

Mercer: return?
By P G Tips
February 11 2020

Bath will want to pursue the ‘way of the warrior’ visiting Sixways in Saturday’s Premiership fixture. As Storm Ciara gives way to Storm Dennis, high and gusty winds and heavy rain are expected for Saturday afternoon, weather almost as unpredictable as last Saturday at Murrayfield. Constructive rugby may not be the answer in such conditions, but fighting spirit, cool heads and warrior hearts will be prized qualities. Have Bath got it in them to win?

With the mid point of the season approaching both sides are near the bottom of a group of seven mid table clubs, bracketed by only eight points. Victory could catapult Bath towards the top four, while defeat could push them as low as ninth.  Of the 30 Premiership meetings between the two clubs, Bath have won 24, but last year succumbed to one of their most humiliating defeats in a decade. Leading 19-3 at half time (and seemingly in control) they failed to score again. Having lost red carded Ross Batty fifteen minutes from time they suffered three yellow cards in the eighteen minutes of extra time, conceding ten points to lose 21-19. They will be desperate to avoid a repeat but Worcester will feel confident of netting their fifth Premiership win of the campaign.

Forwards such as Schonert, Mama, Kitchener and Du Preez should relish the testing conditions while Duncan Weir at stand off could be the ideal man to control tempo and territory with his kicking. If chances do come to run the ball, watch out for Humphreys, Shillcock and the highly rated rising star at centre Ollie Lawrence.

Bath have a strong pack and set piece of their own of course and will be hoping for good news from the England camp. Will Stuart may be retained this week in preparation for the Ireland game, but Bath skipper Charlie Ewels, discarded last week, may be released as could Tom Dunn. Taulupe Faletau is available for selection, as is Zach Mercer who is back in full training. If the match is tight he could be the ideal forward to add zest and energy from the bench. Aled Brew and Ruaridh McConnochie are both described as “there or thereabouts”. If all are available Bath should have few excuses if they fail to put in a combative performance.

In Henry V, the young King describes his army as “but warriors for the working day.” Saturday’s weather threatens a tough working day for Bath but a workmanlike win, based on warrior spirit, would be very welcome.

As expected, Stuart retained - along with Underhill Joseph & Ewels.

Great for Charlie but disappointing for us.

Dunn released though - hopefully will play.

Yep - great for Charlie to hold bags, when he could be playing! Understandable that England want to retain him for their training purposes but frustrating none the less.

Thankfully we are covered for most of the positions. Not sure we will be too weakened by the international period this week.

Noticed that Cameron Redpath has been called up.

How does the son of a Scotland international end up playing for England?

The mind boggles.

Not doubting his eligibility for England. Just find it bizarre your old man played for Scotland and yet you end up deciding to play for England.

The Gary Graham story was even more odd. Father played for Scotland, he decides to play for England and is selected in the squad but not capped, so he decides that he is Scottish like his old man after all...

Interesting Cameron Redpath another 20/21 year old ready for international rugby yet we can't get one ready for club rugby, genuinely curios why this is so?

Mercer followed by Faletau. Decent!

Shame about the weather, because that centre combination could be pretty effective.

best thing to do about this game is to cancel it. did they learn nothing from murrayfield?

Considering it is in the middle of the 6 nations that is a pretty strong side with options from the bench in every position. Hopefully we can keep 15 players on the pitch for 100+ minutes this year.

It feels like every game could define the season at the moment with the table so congested. This has to be a game to target for a rare away win though

Very strong side considering. Time to get right a few wrongs from that shambles of a finish last season. Any chance of an 80 minute performance?

Bath by 5, hopefully more. We should win this with that side even allowing for a potential monsoon. No excuses this time either. We have had plenty of time to prepare, research the Worcester weaknesses and strengths, practice together and have at least one if not two game plans in the bag. Our bench looks really strong as well as the starting XV.

C'mon you Bath.

Doesn't look like there's any particular wind there, most flags are limp if not being saved.
Wet, but not torrential by any stretch.

Out of the window, it's blustery, but not particularly strong

I know it’s a bit blowy out there, but it’s traditional to try and catch the ball when the oppo kick one at you rather than letting their fullback take it every damn time.

Good start, got progressively worse as it went on.

The tap and go 5 phases and knock on when the pen was on the 5m line, followed up 2 mins later with the pen drilled into the 22 then over throwing the line out was just really poor.

Playing into the wind in the second half is going to be tough. Hoops needs a decent team talk

The 5 phases wasn't he right play IMO, and knock one happen.

The overthrow (or;underjump) was silly though. Wind was very blustery at that point, judging by the pitch flags, so throwing long was always going to be risky.
Keep it short, even if the conditions mean that the defence over-resources the front.

Or is that just my blindness as a girly SH coming through?

I don’t think Kitchener knocked it, Chudley fluffed it. But Kitchener should know he’s not 10 and not get stuck in. Overall a bit unlucky for him but I’ll take the rub of the green tbh.

I think he caught Chudley's arm, but not much innit.
None of the defenders were back 10 anyway though (can't remember how far the run has to be to counter that for the others)

meh, it works, and there's no law that could be introduced to stop it.
But...

There's already a law to stop the pre-binding that makes it an effective tactic - it just needs a ref to remember what the laws actually say (if I were an opposing captain, I'd be in the refs ear constantly about that - especially against Bath or Exeter)

Better in the second half. The Wuss defense was up very quickly which stopped us making much space.

Stuck to it and did well in the last 5 or 6 minutes to win those penalties to relieve some pressure. Is the type of win that will give some belief they can win when it's tough.

Take the 4pts in awful weather and move on.

Ref blew the rolling away penalty after about 2 seconds time and time again - both ways to be fair, but flipping heck let the game flow. We exited poorly but were aggressive in defence and sturdy in the tight. Usual effort to blow it at the end but thank god took the win. Stooke and Dunny outstanding for me.
Look for the Chris Cook round-the-back paddle pass on the highlights - beauty!

Hang on a minute. I've not seen the game, but Bath scored 3 tries, knocked one on in the act of scoring and should have had another according to this thread.

The difference between relief and satisfaction, Vs absolute irritation, vitrol and frustration is that missed penalty.

I'm pleased we won. But management should tear everyone a new hole for nearly letting that slip. 9 points up and stopped playing. 1 point up, time up, your own put in and concede a penalty at the scrum. It's truly weak and infuriating.

We absolutely have two winnable games coming. Our squad without internationals is good enough. We need to get our mental game in order. Yes take the points here. But don't miss the point that we nearly lost a game we never should have been close because of bad play.

Very much this. But. We're in the position to close out games which we weren't last season, so it's positive progress.

With regard to the “get a grip” post I’m not totally satisfied since we almost let the match slip away & if it was anticipated that Worcs would have run us off our feet in dryer conditions I would have expected far more from our backs. How did the centres perform? However, we are right in the pack & on a par with most of our rivals, clearly not setting the world alight & failed miserably in the Euro group, but from the comments pre-season I sensed that expectations from a fair few were somewhat below this level of achievement in Hooper”# first year & without a head coach.

I agree with hasta that the difference is so minute ie the missed Pennell penalty.

But the problem with that is that had Pennell kicked it, some of those on ere would have completely thrown out the rest of what was a not bad performance away against a decent side in awful conditions.

So whilst the performance was far from perfect and we really should’ve won more comfortably, the fact we did win, especially given the circumstances, and that we’re up to 4th is really rather encouraging.

I know that it wasn’t the day for it, and most of the time it didn’t really work, but Bath did actually chuck the ball around in the backs a bit and what I saw was encouraging from that 12/13 combo.

So, are any of those doomongers who said Hooper would be a disaster & we would struggle to avoid relegation having a re-think? I guess not.

I really hate these stupid, petty posts. As if we've finally arrived. Jesus, man. Have a word with yourself.

I'll judge Hooper at the end of next season and I would say the same if we were 12th or 1st.
It's February in his 1st year. Get a grip.
Is anyone bouncing off the walls with delight after that match? is anyone hailing Hooper as the new messiah? Is anyone saying that "We've arrived" or "Turned a corner" because of that one match?
Or have we now earned more wins after 10 games played than some were predicting for the entire season? You may have been willing to give Hooper 2 full years, as were many posters; and the post you quoted obviosly wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at those who were unwilling to give Hooper 1 game, because they KNEW we'd be the worst team in the Prem, and lucky to win half our home matches and any awayones.

The vast majority of us are well aware that we're part of the chasing pack, behind Saracens and Exeter; and where we are within that pack of 8-10 teams, comes down to luck with injuries, small differences in execution / belief, and maybe even down to the bounce of a ball / ref's decision or a 50m penalty in blustery wind.
The loudest voices on this board though, think that we're one of the bottom 3 clubs, have thought that for years, and loudly proclaimed that this was going to be our worst ever year with the worst ever DOR and coaching crew.

I'm not one to make such comments as you quoted; but I'm not going have a go at someone for ridiculing the ridiculous.

... and if Bris were to beat Saints, it would be further evidence that they really are a good side (no shame in having lost to them), and the anyone-can-beat-anyone nature of the league.

Perfectly possible for us to be 3rd after next w/e, and mathematically possible to be second.

Having Zach back is a massive lift. Will be weird to see two brilliant English 8s going head to head whilst Tom Curry plies someone else’s trade against Ireland.

Understand where you’re coming from and I’m not a doom-monger but I will reserve judgement
until the end of season. Certainly the result was good however although not having watched the game but read the observations on this forum I’m not surprised it was a bit hit and miss. (Sm128)

The giving away of that penalty when we seem to be dominating scrums was unforgivable. I doubt if Hoops or Hats or Lils will be resting on their laurels until they sort out discipline especially at such a crucial period. We did score three tries to their two but we did concede 8 kickable pens and they missed 5 of them including the last one.

That is where Hoops et al have to work on, discipline especially in the red zone. We had nearly 44% possession in the first half and lost that half and 80% in the second and won. We were also playing against the wind in the second half!

I'm beginning to think that Zach is now first choice over Faletau!

Agree strongly with this, our front row replacements need work as they seem to struggle in the final quarter.

"We had nearly 44% possession in the first half and lost that half and 80% in the second and won. We were also playing against the wind in the second half!"

I haven't yet seen the game but perhaps the thinking was no more complicated than kick using the wind to gain territory in first half and second half keep it in hand to make hard yards against strong wind?

Having Catt and Henry T out for the whole season has made an obvious difference to our porp strength in depth. Can't quite work out Boyce yet but sounds like they may have made up their mind about Nixon (if the Bayonne rumours are true). Bath aren't the only ones with injury / availability issues in the front row of course.

Looking forward to the Quins game tbh.

Two points of note - the red zone kick was 55 yards out - thats one hell of a red zone.
And, on the scrum front Nixon is presumably the replacements, replacements, replacement prop - presuming Stuart, Judge and Thomas are ahead of him.
While Boyce, presumably, has Obano and Catt in front of him.

Mercer made 58 metres from 23 carries. Exactly what was required in those conditions

I hope we don't descend into a football mentality where a loss means 'Hooper Out' and a win means 'Hooper In' on this forum. It is never that clear cut.

I didn't see the game but wonder what happened at the final penalty? In that situation the losing team have nothing to lose, they will roll the dice and sucker the ref into giving them a penalty with some dark arts if they can. Or did we just crumble?

From what I've seen on the highlights, they put massive shove on while we tried to simply hold it and keep control to win ball back but seemed to lose it more on the loose side [but what do I know about that stuff!]

Perhaps Rhys was about 5 - 10 metres too conservative with the pen kick to touch that would have put it beyond the kick at sticks but then we probably would have faced a defensive lineout around our 22 metre line

Highlights on BT sport. Last scrum just looks like Nixon got outmuscled to me - he pops up under pressure. I’m not a front rower so I’m sure it’s more complex than that!

It certainly is about technique (a good initial hit) and strength. Also, a tight head depends on the shove from behind and from the flank. Both are crucial to his success.

Still we won for which I am very grateful. However, letting that lead slip and nearly throwing it away when we should/could have been another two scores up, is poor and the team should be royally b------cked on both counts.

We look forward to next week when hopefully we will put in the full 80 minute performance which is still eluding us.

So we won a tight game in atrocious conditions The conditions dictated the tactics and we edged it. I fail to see how anyone could derive anything (other than what they already thought they knew) about our ability to play open running rugby. I for one will take that we played the conditions away from home well enough to win and look forward to hopefully better conditions for our next game. Although I’m not holding my breath.

"So, are any of those doomongers who said Hooper would be a disaster & we would struggle to avoid relegation having a re-think? I guess not. Bath Hammer - I understand your frustration that some predicted doom & gloom as you have intimated - but at the end of the day we have a win lose ratio of 6/4 which is great yet we are a point behind a team with a lower win/lose ratio and only 2 points ahead of a team with a win/lose ratio of 4/6 - What does this tell you about our mindset and accuracy and ultimately that comes from the DoR

Personally I think concern was rightly voiced that our director of rugby had 1. Not even completed the requisite training badges to coach at this level! & 2. The club some 8 months prior stated that the previous DoR was remaining in place as it was felt that Hoops was not ready and required further tutoring for at least this current season.

There was never a suggestion that our forward pack would not dominate games, however as the vast majority of our salary cap is spent on this much vaunted backline it would be nice if they got the ball once in a while and created tries??

Whilst I loved being battered at six ways yesterday and the journey home was a great one having won a really tight contest (That should never have been that tight) the Warriors showed even in those conditions you could run the ball and create opportunities.

Do I personally think Hoops is doing a good job - Yes I honestly do and the coaching team - this however comes with a caveat that I am still of the honest opinion that we need a Head Coach and it is not coincidence that our name has been linked with the likes of Joe Schmidt and I am sure over the coming months, because if we do not address our current style of play and creativity we will 1. Not attract the attacking type of player we are all clearly craving for at 10 or 12 and 2. We will struggle to keep our star backline players, who at the moment are being starved of opportunities and ball.

Strange to bring negativity into the thread after a Bath win, why not just enjoy it? For me it's quite simple, Bath win and I'm happy, Bath lose and I'm beyond grumpy.

As for Hooper, no my opinion has not changed one bit, but lets leave that for another thread on another day.

1. It tells us we aren't getting enough bonus points and that's been true for many seasons now.

2. DOR is not the same as a head coach.

3. There absolutely was a suggestion that thebpack would not be strong enough which is why Hoops said it was going to be the focus for this season. The forwards are now going well.

4. We won away against a Warriors side who are no mugs and in atrocious conditions. We wouldn't have done that last year.

5. We need a head coach, and experienced 10 and an experienced 12 and the last 2 should not be the same person. We knew that.

We have a rookie coaching team. We have a reasonably clear plan to get better which is being implemented. We are seeing progress. We need one or two recruits to help everything come together

I'm pretty happy with what I'm seeing, tbh. It's miles better than last season.

... IMHO, of course.

Now in Honolulu
