Bolt For the Blues

These are difficult times and survival in every sense is paramount. That can be the only reason that Blues have announced a tie-up with Saints which effectively ends any hopes we have of a proud independent club reaching the Premiership and competing on a level playing field with the big boys.

Instaed we will effectively become Saints' "A" team and for any true Blue that will be unpalatable. We want to see our boys doing battle for our club not stepping onto Goldington Road with an eye on making it onto Franklin's Gardens.

Blues' management probably had little choice - that doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Read about it all here and make your own judgement.

"...effectively ends any hopes we have of a proud independent club reaching the Premiership and competing on a level playing field with the big boys."
When was that ever a realistic ambition? As I have quoted in another thread, in the last 10 years Exeter have been the only 'outsider' to be promoted to the Premiership and stay there. With the exception of Exeter, and possibly one other club, ALL the other ten clubs are loss-making machines, despite the contributions from their sugar daddies, TV money and RFU funding. Bedford, post the Frank Warren era, never had the financial clout, nor the spectator base, to successfully compete at the highest level.
The worldwide game of rugby is in for big changes in the new post Covid-19 world that we will shortly move into and I am grateful that the board at Bedford Blues have moved so quickly in securing this arrangement with Northampton. Does it sacrifice our full independence - yes (but to what extent?). Does it help to secure our short/medium term future in the second tier of English rugby - yes.
It will be interesting to see how other Championship clubs react over the coming weeks.
