Sixways Roars Again as Warriors Push Bath in Spirited Return

Worcester Warriors may have fallen 33–19 to Bath Rugby on Friday night, but the result was almost secondary on an emotional evening that saw Sixways host top-flight rugby once more. 

The sense of occasion was clear from the moment the teams ran out. Thousands of fans, starved of action since the club’s troubles, filled the stands with a mixture of anticipation and pride. The Warriors rewarded that faith immediately. Inside three minutes, a sweeping move finished by Louis Brown had the crowd on its feet, reminding all present what they had been missing. 

Bath, brimming with international experience, hit back through Guy Pepper and England scrum-half Ben Spencer, but Worcester’s determination was unmistakeable. The scrum gave the hosts a platform, and Tom Seabrook crashed over just before half-time to send Warriors in 14–12 ahead, the cheers echoing across Sixways like old times. 

The second half brought a dose of reality. Spencer’s second try, just minutes after the restart, shifted momentum firmly Bath’s way. Further scores from Tom Dunn and Vilikesa Sela stretched the visitors’ advantage, their Premiership pedigree shining through. Yet Worcester refused to wilt, and full-back Will Trewin’s late try brought the loudest cheer of the night, a moment of joy for the faithful who had waited so long to see their side in action again. 

Seabrook’s powerful display earned him the Player of the Match award, while Bath’s Spencer was the game’s clinical difference. But the night belonged less to individuals and more to the return of a club and community. 

“It just feels amazing to be back here,” said lifelong supporter Sarah Collins, waving her old Warriors flag. “The score doesn’t matter tonight — we’ve got our team and our stadium alive again.” 

John Evans, who travelled in from Kidderminster with his two young sons, agreed: “The boys have never seen a Warriors match before — now they have. That’s the most important thing. We’re building memories again.”

 

The Way Forward

While Bath’s quality told in the end, Worcester showed flashes of promise. Their set-piece work and backline ambition offered encouragement, as did the hunger of younger players like Trewin and Brown. 

Head coach Matt Everard was pragmatic after the match:

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, and no one’s pretending otherwise. But tonight was about re-establishing who we are. If we keep building fitness, combinations, and that connection with the crowd, results will follow.” 

The road back to consistency at the highest level may be long, but the signs of life are clear. Warriors now face the challenge of blending seasoned campaigners such as Kvesic with the next generation, while ensuring the Sixways faithful stay engaged every step of the journey. 

Though the scoreboard favoured Bath, the evening was a triumph for Worcester in another sense — proof that rugby has a heartbeat once again at Sixways. The smiles, the songs, and the sheer noise told their own story: the Warriors are back.
